and then x800pro for $330 from outpost.com

I just wanted to check w/ the computer gods here that this is going to provide me with a solid gaming exp. for HL2 / CS:S and that this is all compatiable. Im probably not going to be ocing and the 80gig is fine for me since i have a PVR w/ about 320 gigs of storage.

thank you in advance

ummm.... is it still in fashion to tell everybody whos buying a x800 to get a 6800gt instead?

if it is...

bay, i think you should get a 6800GT instead

from the benches im seeing, nvidia is holding its own with source, and kicking ati's ass with doom3. go with a 6800gt.

Sounds like a decent system. I would recommend the following but just as personal preference not as criticism.

1. Bigger Hard drive (I try to purchase a drive that is 2X what I currently need. Performance decreases as a hard drive fills up).
2. Consider getting two hard drives and doing a raid 0.
3. Make sure there are no conflicts with the memory/motherboard/PSU (I would search the boards and get current owner feedback).
4. If this is a gaming PC consider getting an Audigy soundcard.

RAID isn't worth it.

And if you have a PVR with 320 gigs of storage, you should realize you shouldn't buy the drive from AT and go to the hot deals forums where 80+ gig drives are doing for 40-50 dollars AR

As a computer who have used both ATI and Nvidia products alike, I believe you should go with 6800 GT. Nvidia has the upper hand on ATI in 6800GT vs X800pro

I'm aware that the gt > x800, but I have a hard time spending $400 on a video card, especially when the x800 is available for such a cheap price but I'll think about it.

I already have optical drives and I'll check out the sata drive.

In response the the coolmax PSU, I love it, built two systems w/ it and it is rediculously quiet.

6800GT... it well worth the extra money. I make $ 6.00 and hour and had no problem putting down $428.35 for it.

Do it. Enjoy Doom3 and prepare for the source engine and the wonderous Half-Life2.

But aside form the video bickering, looks like a solid system.

Best of luck with it!

Ian

go w/ the 6800GT. And dont waste your cash on RAID0. There is no real performance gain for gaming. If you were video editing then yes, but otherwise it would just be bragging rights.

Get the x800 pro if you like hl2 better then doom 3. Or the 6800 if all you do is play opengl. If you play a vast type of games accross both, the x800 is a better choice.

Remember performance is only one part of the picture. It is now a FACT that ati has superior drivers to nvidia.
While the 6800GT may be faster in most things for now, I doubt it will for much longer. And the peace of mind knowing that if the card has a game problem, ATI will fix it long before nvidia would.
