Hi guys, below are some of my comments from my earlier post:

Is this a sensible upgrade???

I need some urgent giudance on the RAM and CPU cooler for my overclocking project....

=====================

Hello friends,

I have this config currently:

AMD Duron 900 Spitfire
Some KT133 Mobo
256 MB SD ram
20gb Maxtor HDD 5400rpm
12x8x32x LG CDRW (PIO4)
48x LG CD Rom (PIO4)
1.44 FDD
ATI Radeon 8500 64MB BBA
Generic Mini ATX case 200W smps.

This setup is almost 18months old...except for the Radeon and the 256SD Ram which I had plugged in some 3-4months back.

Since I have had a rather satisfying time with this AMD setup, I have decided to stick with AMD again...and since i have learnt quite a bit about computers and their working, this time i am planning to try some overclocking too!

This is what i have in mind:

XP 1700+ Throughbred (OEM-Multiplier unlocked) ( I plan to overclock it to atleast 2200+ speeds or maybe even more)
Jetway V333Pro, KT333, supports the new 333fsb cpu's. (N-force 2 is way out of my budget)
2 x 256 MB Kingston Value Ram PC2100 (toatal 512) (PC2700 ram not yet available here in India)
80GB Seagate Baracuda IV 7200rpm
52x Sony cd rom (ATA66)
New ATX Case with AMD Approved 320w Power Supply. (1x80mm intake fan and 1x80mm exhaust)

From my old setup i will use the following:

LG 12x8x32 cdrw (i dont burn too much...so speed is not so imp for me)
ATI Radeon 8500
FDD

What do u think about this upgrade.....do u think it's worth it....or would u suggest some changes....

I realise it too that the Mobo is not a very famous one like ASUS or MSI, but it is a very good quality board anyway. It has got support for multiplier adjustments by dipswitches. Vcore adjustment in bios from 1.6v to 1.9v in 0.25v increments. Also it had got vmem adjustment in bios from 2.5v to 2.7v. So should be a good board for overclocking.

As for MSi there is no proper supply here and ASUS although it is available here, it is out of my budget....this Jetway V33PRO is costing me approx $70.....whereas an ASUS KT333 mobo will cost me almost twice as much at $136. Only available ASUS models at a comparable pricepoint are A7V266VM...n-force1 based...$84 and another model based on the outdated KM133A chipset at $75.

So , not much choice u see...

=======================

Availability is the main thing here...and its the case with quality RAM too. The only brands available at a reasonable price here are KINGSTON...and TRANSCEND.

As for overclockability of this particular 256MB module of KINGSTON, I have sucessfully tested it at 166fsb at cas 2.5. very stable.

I tried the local mkt...and i have one more choice now....it's MICRON PC2100 cas2.5...this model comes in packaging similar to RDRam.....i think it should be good 4 overclocking too...

Any feedbacks on MICRON?

Now I have come across the biggest problem...

I am unable to find a single copper bottom CPU cooler for my project.....the market is flodded with cheap no name coolers....and the only branded ones available are:

1) Thermaltake Volcano II with 60x60x25mm fan at 36cfm.

2) CoolerMaster DP5-6IC13 with 60x60x15mm fan at 24cfm.

Will these suffice in keeping the t-Bred cool at 1.8ghz speeds???

No Arctic Silver either....the best interface material that i could find is TITAN Silver Grease!!

Will it do??

Please Help!!

From what I can see, I can only give you a few comments and maybe some suggestions.

So far it looks fine. The motherboard I might not be too sure of. I'm not keen on lesser known brands as I've had a few in the past and they're been nothing but trouble. But for overclocking... it might do well. Dipswitches are the past, and nowadays almost everyboard features multiplier adjustments in the bios. So its much much more convient. But the good part is that your board supports a voltage of up to 1.9v. Which is very good. My current motherboard, which is a Abit AT7 MAX only support as high as 1.75 from the deault TBred voltage of 1.5v. My current overclock of a 1800+ 1.53ghz cpu is 1910MHz (11.5 x 166fsb). It is a very good overlock, but I know the voltage is limiting my overclock since at 12 x 166fsb (1992MHz) the system will just reboot right after getting into windows. Hence you might fare better ;)

Since your goal is to overclock, I recommend a good HSF. I use a Thermalright AX-7 and it's one of the best out these. My CPU runs at 43C idle.

And you will need very good ram, as these days ram is limiting the fsb you can reach. And, 1 stick of ram is better than 2 IMO :)
My comment on Micron ram is good. In the past I owned a stick of 256MB Micron ram. It was rated at CAS2.5 but I was able to run it at CAS2 and at aggressive timings with no problems.

So far... your setup looks good. Good luck!

You might want to look at some of the 2100+ chips at newegg. The rumor is that they are "B" tbred chips. There is a good possiblity the overclocking might be better with them.
