Is this a hoax? Sounds like one, but I'm not sure

::EDIT:: HOLY CRAP ... THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FROM PatboyX's link ...
The check typically clears after one or two days, but the fact that it is counterfeit is not detected until several days or weeks later, by which time the victim has sent the item and the "additional money" to the scammer and his representative. Most banks will hold the victim accountable for the value of the counterfeit check.

Here is my original message, PLEASE IGNORE IT as it is not a good strategy.

If you do accept to take the deal, simply wait until payment clears before shipping.
Use a guarenteed shipping method.
Insure it.

If he gives you crap or rushes things, then back out as he's probably scamming.

if he sends the money first via M.O.... you have all the money right there. it cant bounce, etc. it basically means you have the money...

i was thinking the same thing. usually scams involve western union or something like that. i assume he wants you to ship the speakers to England?

Nope. The classic nigeria scam is the dude sends you a $10k cashier's check, you deposit it, it goes through, western union him $5k back, then the cashier's check comes back and you don't get the $10k.

With this, he'd get a cashier's check, deposit it, see the money, send the product, then the cashier's check would come back invalid, and he'd be out his speakers.

worth repeating for those who feel MO and Cashiers Checks are insta-gold.

Have him WU the money to you.

Once the recipient picks up money for a WU, there is no refunding or any recourse, which is why scammers like to use it for recieving payment.

I did a trade with a guy in London about 12 years ago and it was insane. We were exchanging filters for ham radios, and he sent his overnight air, and I sent mine by the cheapest UPS method. Huge mistake..

I get it in a couple of days, and he doesn't get his for a long time. After a week, he calls me, all worked up. Would I have given him my address and number if I was scamming him? I call UPS and they tell me it's..in transit. That's it. After two weeks, the guy is sending emails calling me a crook, threatening to post my name and address in newsgroups and on a couple of message boards. UPS has lost the damn package. The guy calls me and I tell him they lost it, and he can call himself and ask about it. He's totally pissed and hangs up. The next day, the phone rings, he got it, and he apologized for getting so upset. It took 18 days total to show up.

Yeah I don't see how this could be a scam... as long as you get the money first then a sales a sale... if you get an offer in the US take that instead... if not... then go for it!!

well either way, I'll just wait on this. I'm headed to NYC on Thursday so I'll deal with selling my speakers after I get back. But there's hope for my speaker search after all! Not only is someone selling Dynaudio Contour S1.4's, another guy's selling his JMlab-Focal Electra 907 Be's! I'm just not quite as sure what to do about multi-channel complements for the Electras since they don't do surround sound.
