being that it requires Windows and a 166MHz CPU, I'm going to bet that its not a hardware modem.

Here is my problem hombre- it is a v90 modem....

I want the .v92/..44 (Many people have said that .44 is the key...v92 is hot air at best) b/c it would improve my gaming...but that costs near 70 dollars!

Anyone know of a much cheaper one?

Also, what is voice?

And yes, I spent a while looking at that page b4 posting here

Kind of interesting that to have a working modem in Linux, you have to get a ~50+ dollar model instead of using the free AR winmodems. Kind of erases a lot of the 'free' aspect of linux. :Q

As for your situation, beggars can't really be choosers, I've seen V90 56K hardware modems consistently go for ~20 bux in the FS/FT forums.

Um...Winmodem themselve are inferior to Hardware modems...

They don't use CPU cycles, they get better ping/latency...

That extra cash goes a LONG way

I'd suggest you read the AT FAQ on winmodems.

I'll say this though, I have used 3 hardware modems (USR, Diamond Supra Express, Actiontec External) on my main system and I don't see any difference on my end between the hardware modems and the free after rebate winmodem I'm using right now.

I`ve both a WinModem(which has a DSP) and Hardware modem,to be honest both give me the same pings, connection speed, download speeds etc, even in gaming there`s no difference for me,unless you`ve a very slow CPU then there`s no real point in going with a Hardware modem over a WinModem.
