Is this a good TV or do we need DLP?

tami and I are looking to buy the Sony KDSR50XBR1 TV for our one-year wedding anniversary, and we're wondering if we've made the right choice. We went to Circuit City and checked out the many TVs on display, but nothing stood out like this TV and its 60" counterpart.

A link to the TV is here:

Is there anything this TV can't do (do we need a DLP?!)? Or is it good out-of-box?

And obviously, do we need any extra cables or anything or does the TV come with that? For the price, you'd think it would be included.

BARGAIN! BARGAIN! BARGAIN! It is VERY important with these TVs.

The cost to the store for the 50 inch is $2600 yet they charge $3500. You could get a floor model for right around $2600-2800 Dollars, throw in the bulb warrenty and you are talking $3000-3200.

You will not be able to get the tv anywhere near 2600, they are also not going to throw in the most profitable part (the warranty). The only possible way to get a discount is to buy a lot of accessories and the warranty, then they may take 100-200 off at most.

When did i say they "give the warrenty for free" ? I added 400 to the price for the warrenty.

I got a quote from a store for $2600 for their floor model of the 50 inch plus $369 for 3 year warrenty. If i had the space, I would have jumped on it. 🙁

Well it is rare for them to price it at no profit, it would have to be really outdated, but from working at best buy, the best possible thing to do is buy a floor model w/ warranty. Since the floor models are beat to hell usually, the warranty protects it for 4 years, so if it does break they replace it and ur still good for 4 years.

IMO these SXRD sets have the best picture quality of any display technology. I don't care for the looks of the set itself - they used an old cabinet from a prior Sony set, and those outboard speakers look dumb IMO - but that is not a big deal.

That being said, I don't think I'd buy one - the 2006 RP sets will finally start to allow for true 1080p input, whereas all this set can display is deinterlaced 1080i or upconverted 720p/480p/480i. I'd wait a few more months and get a 2006 model instead.

when are the 2006 sets slated to be released? how much is the retail price?

i found a site that sells the set + warranty for less than 3k btw (free shipping)... they had good resellerratings as well.

I don't think 2006 MSRPs have been announced yet. I'd expect the sets to start reaching retailers this summer. The new LED-based DLP sets (which don't require a color wheel or replaceable bulb) will be hitting at the same time, and should be brilliant as well. I don't personally think this is a good time to buy a high-end HDTV (though it arguably is a good time to buy a low-to-mid-end one - the 720p sets are pretty heavily discounted, and 720p is plenty in a 50" set anyway IMO).

I was looking at the 60" one before I bought my DLP. The picture is gorgeous but the price and all the "green blob" stories over on avsforum made me decide against it.

Yes, the one thing I HATED about this tv was the speakers and how they were placed.

I personally think it's the ugliest RPTV on the market, which is cruelly ironic considering its price and fantastic image quality. They should at least make those dopey Dumbo-ear speakers removable - for many people it creates a real space problem because it makes the set about 1' wider than a typical RPTV of the same screen size. Just poor design IMO. My personal opinion is that the Samsungs have the handsomest design - it's very minimalist and clean - whereas the SXRD sets look like something out of the mid-80s.

i dunno if i want to wait. 😱

what other TVs should i look at -- just in case i am to decide to pursue other options?

Best Buy, upholding a warranty? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

What about cables? I haven't seen anywhere what cables come in this box.

What are you gonna hook it up to? VCR? Sat receiver? DVD? Console? More than likely you already have these cables that came with the products. More than likely the TV will come with a power cable only. If any of your components have HDMI I'd look into an HDMI cable or component cables if you don't have them over the standard RCA cables. I think you'll enjoy your purchase no matter what it is, HD is amazing stuff. If only there were more of it!

hey don, how much do you suspect the 2006 units will cost? are we talking $7k or closer to $5k or somewhere higher than that?

I'd look at the HP DLP sets, which actually do allow 1080p inputs, as well as the Samsung and Toshiba DLPs.

I was in your situation a few months ago, and ultimately decided that it was unwise to spend the added cash needed to get a 1080p set (I probably would have gone for the SXRD), since next year's models are clearly going to be better, in material ways. I ended up with a Samsung HLR5067W, with which I have been delighted (and which is now available very cheap from Amazon.com).

That said, if cost is no oject to you, the SXRD has, in my view, the best image quality of any flat-screen or RP HDTV.

Personally, in my research, I found I liked the image quality of LCoS (aka SXRD) and DLP better than LCD RPTV or any flat-screen. Personally I think plasmas and LCD flatscreens look really crappy by comparison, though obviously YMMV.

No, no, nothing like that. I imagine they'll be priced comparably to the 2005 sets (though the new, LED-based DLP sets will be more than traditional DLP TVs). You can look at AVS Forum for more details on the various 2006 lines, but if anything it looks like the premium for 1080p sets will be less than it was in 2005. I don't think Sony has announced its 2006 offerings yet, so no way to know their pricing.

Although the requirments are usually strict, they due uphold the warranty. Its not a complete scam, otherwise how would it be legal? The bulb is covered under the waranty, so when it goes out in 1.5 years on a floor model, ur replaced.
