Is this a good time to upgrade a 1700+ and P3?

Ok, ive been posting and reading and posting :p

I think I better upgrade my 1700+ since it's on a K7S5A and it is a early one that wont OC. I am going to movie it over onto my wifes P3 800 which should be one heck of an upgrade for her at this point

Now my question is:

In this situation is it a good time to go for something like a barton 2500+ ? is it a good time to buy this? I need to goa CHEAP upgrade route and want the best bang for my buck because I am going to need to get a 9700 probably non pro for my 17000+ box.

So.. I have 512 MB of crucial pc2100 and 512 mb of crucial pc2700

I cannot afford to upgrade ram as well. I will probably use the pc2700 for now whilst leaving the pc2100 on the 1700+ ECS

I want a board that is under 100$ definitley. I do NOT need ANY onboard features. I will never use raid, or onboard sound (I have an Audigy 2) Power is not a problem I have an Antec 430 W TRUEpower. And I will be getting an ATI card 9700 probably.

I have plenty of LAN cards so I dont even care about onboard LAN.

Dual channel would be nice for the future, and it needs decent OC options for the barton OC. Also SATA would be nice for the future but I wont be using it now.

Thanks!

The 2500+ and Shuttle AN35N-Ultra would be a powerful and inexpensive upgrade combo-155$ with OEM or 161$ with retail.

What new EPOX?

I take a look at the shuttle I prefer to grab retail processors. It's just worth the piece of mind for me. Besides no one can ever tell if you have actually overclocked a processor so I dont buy that voiding the warranty crap. Ill just use a different sink so that they thermal goo it comes with doesnt get removed either. So no problem

anyway, more advice welcome I want to by quickly now that I have decided.

How about the DF NF 2 AL? It looks like the lan party version without all the junk I dont need, but I would appreciate opinions

I wouldn't say this is the best time to upgrade... Wait for the Prescott to come out, cuz the prices for other processors should then drop.

Prescott won't drive down barton prices, it will drive down P4 prices I would guess, and the athlon 64's wont be out for awhile. When does the prescott come out?

the 64 is out the 23rd *japanese are buying them now* and prescott is months away. don't get caught up in the wait for the next best thing or you'll never upgrade again ;)

I think you are right. There is no way I am going to buy an athlon 64 anyway they are going to be way to expensive
