I'm looking at eather the Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner or the 2400 model for $50 less. I want to scan pictures and documents with good quality on the pictures. Are there any other good scanners I should be looking at for $200 or less?

umm just wondering, most people use digital cameras for pictures.

so might be a better investment for a digital cam instead

Um, Digicams are nice, but they lack the controls/options of an SLR, unless you wanna spend big bucks. IMHO, my wifes Canon Sureshot does a better job then a digicam 2-3 times it's cost. Then I just scan in the negatives at super high quality, and poof, very nice digital pictures. We do have a chap digi for snapshots to email around, but it's now where near the quality.

the 2400 is a very good scanner.
my only complaint is the size of smartpanel software which is over 130Mb.

check out the canoscan 5000F. It comes ready to scan negative and posi film. I have it and have been very pleased with its crsip scans. it retails for 170, but if you look around it can be found at frys or best buy on sale for around 150
