After years out of the sys building world, I've been asked to put one together and don't know what's good anymore.
Thanks for helping.

Are there better combos? Is newegg still the place to go?
do I need to get better RAM? The mobo is FSB 533 and the CPU is FSB 800. Is there a better mobo?
how much of a power supply will it need?

stability and reliability are critical. no overclocking.

Intel Pentium 4 / 2.6GHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB - RETAIL
ASUS Motherboard for Intel Pentium 4 / Celeron Processors, Model# P4G8X DELUXE Retail (Front Side Bus 533 / 400 MHz)
ASUS V9520Magic 128MB GeForce FX5200 Video Card - Retail
CRUCIAL MICRON 256MB 32x64 PC 3200 DDR RAM - OEM (x 2 = 512MB)

is the retail CPU fan enough? will it need case fans? what's a good insulated case to cut noise?

this is just for home (non gaming use)

budget $1000 (also have to add in the case, hard drives, CDburner, DVD-+RW drive, etc)

Great system setup in mind, here's a couple revisions and answers to your questions.

Newegg is still the place to go, excellent service and fast as lightning.

Though 533 FSB and 800 FSB shows very little performance increase (relative to the cost increase of the motherboard and processor), that setup isn't too bad. However, the ASUS P4S800 looks like a very, very promising motherboard. It has DDR400 support, FSB800 support, onboard LAN and audio, 8 USB, 2 firewire, and AGP8x. Though I don't believe it's a dual channel DDR solution, the motherboard is only 99 bucks at newegg. That is a bargain setup especially if you're trying to dive under $1k. A 350w - 400w PSU will be stable enough... maybe even a 300 PSU. The retail HSFs on Intel chips are fantastic. I started out with one of those and overclocked 400mhz on my 1.6Aghz P4 without a problem. The case is really up to you, if noise is a big deal, get Vantec Stealth fans. I'm not sure how you're planning to aim under $1k with a video card such as that. If you do no gaming, the GeForce 4 Mx series is good enough... I even have played some cool games with a GeForce3 Ti320 and that was sufficient. Anyway, I hope this helped. Remember, some computer decisions are just opinion, do a little bit of research and I'm sure you'll hop right back into the market.
