Is this a good pay for a network engr in NJ/NYC?

I've got a lead for a contract position that offers 35/hr for a CCNP certified network engineer. I'm not sure if its in NJ or NYC. and I have to relocate from FL (which isnt that big of deal im single, dont have alot of furnitures)

so Im wondering is 35/hr a good salary to live in NJ or NYC? should I try to ask for more?

35/hr ~ 70K/yr. thats really good salary depending on your experience

I live pretty comfortably right outside of NYC on 35K. I don't think you'd have any major problems on 70K unless you wanted to move into a large apartment/condo in manhattan or anywhere on the NJ waterfront.

Err... why'd you assume 9 hours a day, and if he does work 9 hours a day as a contractor, they'd have to pay him time and a half for the extra 5 hours a week.

I just use a simple formula - hourly rate * 2000. $70k is a pretty good salary. How old are you (OP)?

No... I said 5 hours a week, not 5 hours a day. I was asking why you assumed 9 hours when a "standard" work week is 40 hours (above which hourly employees must be paid for overtime).

(9*5) - (8*5) = 5 hours a week

Gobadgers raises a good point. Health insurance in NJ will run you around $5000 a year. When you figure in that, plus no vacation days, no sick days, no 401k, extra ~7% in taxes, you're looking at the equivalent of a $50k/year salaried position, and you have no job security.

I'd say not worth relocating for the money, but when you figure in the intangible benefits of living in NJ vs FL (we have the best pizza IN THE WORLD), it's a lot more attractive

i make 46.50 an hour in baltimore and after taxes it looks like 45K and dont forget rent in NYC or NJ and health insurance and your own SEP IRA. that is like a 60K job in the city....which is not living paycheck to paycheck, but not as comfortable.

With 1099 you'd pay a SH!TlOAD in taxes. I would ballpack that in addition to 15% social sec, on top of everything else, you'd probably only net about $40K a year. Assuming you could find health insurance for $150 a month, that comes down to about $38K a year, after taxes. The 1099 kills you.
