Sony 17" LCD Black Monitor Model SDM-S71R/B Retail

If it is not good, anything better for under $400 total
Will be used for some games, DVD, mostly internet and office applications

pass on this one - a 17" LCD should be able to do 1280x1024, while this one is listed at only 1024x768, which is normally the native resolution of a 15" LCD.

EDIT: I'd go for this one instead. I've had one for a few months now, and I love it. The Hitachi mentioned above would be good too; it's based on the same LCD panel.

what about the samsung 172T, i've heard a lot of good things about this and it also has a DVI port. I'm not sure if it has a stellar response time though (25ms i think). I have a 152N which isn't as good but it seems to be decent enough for games and has a fairly decent color reproduction and 2d image quality.

Yep, the Samsung 172T is a special guy. It's big brother the 192T is better. 25ms though, but picture quality is superior.

The one NTB is showing is the analogue version, so if you like it go with the 1760nx instead.

My experiences with sony have been almost hostile. Their product managers have the attitude like "you should be thankful we even decided to make a product for you"! I would avoid their products like the plauge.

So which of these would be better?
Are these good monitors for $450

They are both the same monitor, use the same panel, so the specs are identical. The only thing that should sway your opinion are: Dead pixel warranty, anti glare screen, included DVI cable, design and other mini features.

yeah, I thought they might be the same thing.

I am on the edge of buying right now, I need a new monitor pretty soon (by august). I'm not sure if I should buy it now or wait a month or two to see if prices fall. I don't see the flat panel prices dropping drammatically within the next year, but I could be wrong. What do you guys think?

I could also go with a nice $200 19"Flat tube CRT but I have wanted a LCD for a while and it is cheaper to just get what you really want the first time I guess cause I propably get the LCD eventually anyway :) hehe .

(currently I have a Gateway 17" CRT that is about 5-7yrs old still running strong, but it is having touble keeping up with my new 128MB DDR GF TI4200 8x vid card)
