Is this a good HDTV?

mmm...it says its 16:9 aspect ratio under products features but 4:3 under product details. Could just be a mistake by Best Buy as it says widescreen for the product at the top.

I would like to know if this is good too as I am in the market for a low cost HDTV.

I had a direct view HDTV (30") before I got my current one and I wasnt that pleased w/ it. I spent $1500 on my TV and it is many times better than my previous one. My suggestion would be to get a newer technology (rear project LCD, DLP, Plasma). Circuit City had some crazy deals a few weeks back and they regularly run 24month no interest financing.

EDIT: Oh, and from that pics that is definatly a 4:3 TV. Do Not Buy a 4:3 HDTV.

how can it be 4:3 when the screen is widescreen? Other websites say 16:9 and the bundle that they are giving looks good.
Xbox360 $400
30" TV $749
1 free game $30
For $999

If you have advice on a better TV that could equal to that price i'm all ears.

I have read somewhere that some of those slimfit Sammy's sometimes have distortion/warping around the edges of the screen. However, if that isnt the case, I think thats a damn fine deal for the Xbox bundle along with it.

Just as long as you know you can get a Phillips refurb for half the price.

I got my 30" Phillips HDTV about 3 years ago (refurb) for $600 and it's still looking great!

Where did you get it? I'm interested in a new tv also 😛

A friend of mine has one of these. It's terrible. There are so many things wrong with the picture. I don't have the heart to point the flaws out to him but I would never recommend this TV to someone.

I wouldn't get it for two main reasons.

1.) They are heavy as hell. I have one similar and it is a beast. I'd never go CRT again
2.) If your getting it for the 360 it does not output 720p. IT may accept it, but it will upconvert the signal to 1080i. I think all the games on the 360 or at least all the ones ive seen are 720p

It doesnt support 720p but goes to 1080i, how can a TV do 1080i but not support 720p, i guess i'm confused.

Many CRT HDTVs do not support 720p as a native resolution. They will internally scale the 720p signal to 1080i though. But, don't worry about it. Even if the TV doesn't, the 360 has an excellent scaler. There's essentially no difference between the 720p and 1080i modes.

yup they do 1080i, easier scan rate or something. 2nd they have coarse dot pitch which is not actually capable of resolving anywhere near 1080i. 800 sounds inflated for that tv. don't they sell the fine pitch sony for around that now? and that one has clearly superior picture. its almost like looking at a monitor when you look at it up close. i think the samsungs go for 600. avs forum and scuh places tend to state such tv res at 847 lines vs the 1400 lines of the sony. which is sometimes labeled as optimisitc already http://www.twice.com/article/CA269544.html?display=News

more honest label for these types of tv's would be edtv

From what I have read on this model its better than previous slimfits, but still has some geometry issues. Also this new model doesn't have a "panorama" stretch mode for 4:3. It will still stretch it, but it stretches the whole picture the same instead of stretching the sides more than the middle. Other Samsung Slimfits have this mode.

It does have 2 HDMI inputs though, so thats a plus.

If your looking for a "slim" CRT look at the 30 inch LG slimfit Best Buy has. I looked at one in the store and didn't notice any of the geometry problems that the Samsung has, although I could have just been looking at a good unit. It also had a nice anti glare screen. Its around the same price of the Samsung you posted.

Wal-Mart also has a 30 inch Philips (Its the black 30PW9110D TV listed on the Philips Outlet site) for around $525 now with built in tuner. Nice price, but I've heard to many bad reviews on this TV to really give it a try.
