Thanks for the info; I just tried to customize a PC on Dell for with the same components and it came out to $400.00 more. Did you notice that this is in Canadian? It's just that I really want an upgraded vid card and processor. Thanks in advance.

I don't just surf the net and use office apps--I play pretty much every new game that comes out. I wanted to just upgrade my vid card to a 5850 or 5870 but I only have a core2duo on my current rig which I want to upgrade as well.

I want to build a rig like this myself but at every store I've tried to build a similar rig it came out to like $2200.00 or so.

IS there maybe a place that has better deals? I've tried all the basics in Canada like Newegg and TigerDirect and even small mom-n-pop shops--they all came out to a whole lot more than what FS is offering...

Is this a good deal?

Keep in mind this is in Canadian dollars. I tried to calculate it up at Newegg.ca and it came out to about the same price and I was being generous with the brands (always choosing the cheapest when the details of the piece were unknown). Thanks in advance.

$1799.99 vs $2200.00?
Sounds like you saved yourself $400.10 or about 18.186%

It's too bad that the Future Shop has such a dodgy reputation. But maybe your experience will be better.

Yeah I've heard--thing is, I've always built my own PC's and I have always lagged in technology because of it (i.e. had an 8800 gt when the gtx260 came out etc) and for once I want to be on the up and up with the newer technology. I guess I will give it a shot--thanks for all the info.

It's not a bad deal, in the sense that they aren't charging you a huge premium on it. You could assemble it yourself for a bit cheaper. Not sure why you lag in tech because of building your own. You could buy all those parts off Newegg.ca for ~$200 cheaper total I'd guess.

Also they are fleecing you on the ram. 16GB of ram is an entirely unnecessary amount of ram and waste of cash. 4GB is fine, and about $300 cheaper. You might have better luck at ncix.com I was able to set up an equiv PC with 4GB of ram instead of 16GB at $1523

Btw, the exchange rate has USD and CAD pretty close now, so you can almost convert straight across, and we can't make fun of your currency anymore :(

Well the RAM is actually kind of a selling point because I have to run virtual machines for school (civil engineering) and many of these virtual machines run heavy apps like Autocad. I hit a wall trying to run 2 virtual machines on my current rig which has 6 GB of RAM. The 16 would definitely help with VM's no? Or would something like 8 GB be enough?

I am a little guilty of letting my VM run while gaming seeing as how restarting everything can be a real hassle when I have a certain structure built to my specifications and have to retart the VM/Autocad.

I will read up more on the use of RAM with multiple VM's. Thanks.

That system is available with 8GB ram for $1299 USD at Amazon. I guess that's around $1375 Canadian.

It's definately a nice gaming system. Sure, you could probably save $100-200 by building yourself, but if you'd rather not build, Gateway makes some very nice gaming systems and the prices are reasonable. And in my opinion their case is better looking than any case you can buy off Newegg.

I've spent thousands of dollars at Future Shop over the years with never a problem. I've had to take things back, etc. I use them for pretty much everything other than Cables (ebay much cheaper) and computers (building much more fun). They get all my laptop, tv, audio, video game, etc business. I have a Future Shop card and they automatically give you 3 mths to pay on anything small, and 12 months on anything over $299 for no cost. Works well for me and budgeting.

And yes that machine is not a bad deal. You could probably build yourself for $200-300 cheaper.
