Is this a good deal on a Mossberg?

$199 for a Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun at walmart. Sounds like a good deal, don't know much though, this will be my first gun. Want it for home defense, range.

I've never owned a Mossberg but those I know who do seem to have problems with them.

I'd stick with Remington and Winchester for a good shotty.

Poor quality parts and jamming seem to be the main complaints.

I'm not a huge shotgun guy and I only have two friends that own them so maybe it is just my sample and most of them work fine. Still, a Winchester or Remington is only another 75-100. If you plan to use it as your primary self-defense weapon I'd be inclined to spend a bit more for known quality.

I bought a Mossberg 500a like 5 years ago, and i have never had a problem with it. It's obviously not a Benelli but it gets the job done. I have shot a countless number of ducks with the thing.

I don't remember what i paid, but i do believe it was quite a bit more then 200.

What I like about the mossberg is that it seems to have a huge amount of add on's for it. Maybe the Remington does also, was looking at the Remington 870.

I personally am going to get an 18" 870 in about 18 months, mostly just to get familiar with shotguns, because I'm shotgun stupid.

I love my Mossy 500 and have yet to have any problems with it. Also, I can't think of anyone that's had any problems with either a Mossberg 500 OR a Remmington 870. Both quality guns and would suit you well in an HD situation.

I think the 870 has the most out there. Chances are most patrol cars have one in the trunk, yet it has a great following in the outdoorsman category too. I'd buy another 870 over a Mossberg any day of the week.

I hate to crap on you or your friends opinions but I believe they are wrong.

Mossberg makes excellent shotguns all around, and certainly dont use crappy parts.
They are generally the first choice of shotgun for police and military units alike.

I have shot many different types and gauges over the years and they all worked well.
Even the well-used models we had on Navy security were very reliable.
