Acording to Anand's Price Guide, the P3 700 can be found for U$145,00, but doesn't say anything about overclocking potential.

On the other hand, you can get a 1ghz Tbird for U$177,00.

My 2¢: it is not a good deal ...

I agree with kuk. If your gonna spend the money, get you money's worth with an AMD TBird 1Ghz.

If not, buy.com has a PENTIUM III P3 700 FCPGA 256KB L2 CACHE 100MHZ FSB FLIP CHIP for $181.95 - 30.00 = $151.95. I am sure you could also find it a little cheaper.

but is he going to need a new motherbo0ard to run that Tbird? I don't know much about those yet.

If he wants Intel, than this really isn't a bad deal. I don't know what you guys are talking about. Have you checked for sale forum lately. Thats about how much a PIII700 @ 1+ghz is the last time I checked.

It seems like a decent deal for me looking at the prices in the FS/FT forum. It's a given that people will always chime in saying "buy a Tbird instead" in threads like these.

Yeah, it's a good deal... Assuming that you are getting it from a good vender. There are some horrible ones out there, that specialize in o/c'd cpu's.

Your best bet would be to search out Compuwiz1 in the For Sale/Trade forums. He's a top notch guy.

definitely, compuwiz1 is really the man

That sounds good, but find out what the voltage is on at 1015 because that would really suck if you had to push over 1.8 volts into that. 1.8 voltas and below is a good overclock but anything higher than 1.85 is about a guaranteed fry within a couple months.

I hate it when the AMD pushers always come into an Intel question thread and they say that the person's problem is because it is Intel and they should just get and AMD. Or they come into someone asking about the best Intel chip and they just say Tbird 700 or something. Not that I have anything against AMD, but that just really pisses me off.

Steve (aka Compuwiz1) buys cpu's. Then he tests them for stability at overclocked speeds. The ones that tests good, he sells as guaranteed overclockers.

Like I said... He's a great guy.

I bought a p3-700e locally, figuring that most all of them will overclock to 933mhz. Well, this one didn't go above 840mhz. Kinda sucked, considering that I had a 600e running at 828mhz at the time. So basically, I paid $215 for an extra 12mhz. Not a good deal, to say the least.

I then saw the light, and purchased a guaranteed 933mhz from Steve... And actually for less than I paid for the cpu I bought locally.

OTOH, if you can find out the stepping on the PIII's that Buy.com is selling, that might be worth a looksee. If they have cC0 stepping, then I'd go with that one for $150 since they are supposed to be awesome overclockers. Just a thought. :)

However, it's much easier to just buy one from Steve.

Good luck finding a cC0 on buy. I don't even know if the retail cC0 (SL4M7) exists at this point.

But half the fun is actually testing the cpu and finding out what it does yourself. Nothing is more satisfying that doing everything yourself. Hence the reason why Steve probably started soing it. Although it is a gamble...

I'd say that's a pretty good price.

A 1Ghz TBird is ~$300 Canadian
A 1Ghz P3 is ~$800

$185US is about $270-280 Candian (about 1.5x)

Plus that guy would have slighter faster RAM being clocked at 145Mhz.

I'd do it, if you have a good i815 or Via APro133A board.

I got a 700 from Buy.com $173 - $30 off $150 = $143, and it went straight to 1050. Ive backed off to 933, but I have nothing but good things to say about this purchase!!
