Hi, Is this card good?
Asus GeForce 6600 / 256MB DDR / PCI Express / SLI / DVI / TV-Out / Video Card

Any alternate recommendations for a opteron 170 system, 2GB RAM used for transcoding videos. No gaming or overclocking.
Thanks.

VIAN thank you for the quick reply.
I have maybe $100-150 to spend on this, though I dont know a thing about it. I'm basically looking at building a config that is future proof for atleast a year.

I was originally planning to get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121193 but it went out of stock. So thought would go for something better.

As a FYI, I'm planning to get the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium mother board and a 19" TFT either Samsung or LG.

Transcoding video is CPU/HD/System Memory intensive, not video card intensive. So if you're definately NOT gaming... and ALL you're doing is displaying a screen... then you could have "future proofed" yourself YEARS ago with any video card. The newer, snazzier, fancier, more expensive video cards of today are good for only two things... video games and CAD. If you're not doing either, there is NO NEED for an expensive video card... heck, on the MB video is just fine for what you describe.

Of course you have to be TOTALLY HONEST with what you say your needs are... throw ONE game in a year's worth of computer use, and you may wish for a faster card. If you are 100% honest for your needs, and will ONLY use it for web surfing, book-keeping and transcoding video, then there is no need to spend more then the minumum necessary to see an image on your screen.

GeForce 6's are great if you're going to be doing gaming or CAD work, but if it's general office applications and video transcoding, you can get by with a cheaper card (and still play the occasional Windows default "Solitare" card game).

I'd have to say get an ATI FireGL V7100 / 256 MB GDDR3 / PCI Express / Dual DVI / Stereo 3D / Video Card, if you had the money or could find one cheap (ebay or police auctions)
i got both of mine from a police auction, and thats how i got the money to build my comp.
buying and selling cars and stuff from the auctions

Didnt you read the thread posted about 5x faster encoding with X1xxx series cards. If your not gaming get an X1300 which would do wonders with your optereon.

Thanks all. I absolutely dont play games... maybe the occassional yahoo pool or something my 5 year old pops in to play a scooby doo game, thats about it.
Think i'll take some good advice and get a card that is minimalistic.

Thanks all.
