Is this a good card for its price?

Yes it can, but you'd be better off getting a 6800gt. It's more expensive, but it does have shader model 3.0 (which x800 doesnt), and you'll want that for next gen games.

Yes, 6800gt will play next gen games fine (better than x800, trust me). Yes, you want Sm3...as one website said, "theres no sense in buying an ATI card right now" because none have SM3.

If you're short on money, a 6800 vanilla would be a good choice to.

And yes, 6800gt or vanilla will run HL2 at highest video modes...

If you have that much go for a 7800gt. But if you're low on money, a 6600gt performs better then a 6800 vanilla.

Yes, this one random website said that. SM3.0 is a very touchy subject right now because there aren't many games out that support it and the games that do support it, FarCry -offers barely a performance/image quality increase, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - 6600GT's cannot fully enable SM3.0 without a killer performance hit.

My opinion. 70 bucks is hard to justify for SM3.0, especially when you talk about next gen games. I say your best move is to buy a variation of the 7800 such as the 7800GT which should be out within a month (not sure on date).

The X800XL will perform better than the 6800GT in HL2.
