Is this a dvd burner or pc problem?

So I've had 4 dvd burners in the last year, each one seems to start to have reading errors when trying to read a dvd. Each time I'll just replace the drive with a new cheap and it starts reading again, problem solved. It seems to start to go to hell when I start burning discs though, like either cd's or dvd's. So i'm wondering if there could be something with my sata controller or the drives these days are just cheap pieces of crap. It seems to point to the drives being crappy. I've tried samsung, asus, lite-on and the latest one is an lg. I'm considering going back to ide since i'm getting really sick of buying new drives, so if anyone has any clues, i'd really appreciate it.

Maybe it's netflix's crappy discs... although my last drive started doing the same thing and I put another drive in, then for kicks and giggles tried to burn a regular cd in the old drive and that totally failed. So it seems like it is pointing toward crappy drives at microcenter.

Cerb it's an old nForce 570LT SLI chipset, running an AMD x2. I know, I know, it's ancient. I don't game anymore and it works. Power supply seems to be fine, although it is one of those 'green' antec ones. It's either 650 or 750. What do you mean by caps?

Capacitors. Have you ever tried blowing one of them out with compressed air? If a lens becomes dirty it can affect performance. I'd also try connecting it to a different power connector on another cable.

Bolded for clarity. Shooting a compressed air at a capacitor is not likely to do what you want.

Great idea about the lenses getting dirty. OP, do you smoke, have pets, or live in an especially dusty area?

No smoke. No pets. No more dust than normal. I vacuum out my pc once every couple of months. Bout 2-3 months is all the life I seem to get out of these drives and then they all start having problems reading discs. I don't have any canned air or i'd try that, but I suspect it wouldn't do much.

With as cheap as new drives are getting a replacement shouldn't be very costly. I had issues with several drives with the most problematic being made by lite-on, actually a sony optiarc bdrw which is a rebadged lite-on that was terrible with reading discs. I ended up spending more for the pioneer bdrw which has been great for me.

As for cleaning a drive there are different products on the market for doing that and a dusty lens has only occurred a few times for me over the years.
