Is this a Bot attack?

All of a sudden my temps shot up. When I check I find my CPU usage is bouncing from 50-70% at idle. Considering normal is 5% what the heck could have happened? Spybot can't find anything and I've gone back 2 weeks on system restore to no avail. Any ideas?

disbale your ethernet and/or wifi and see what happens. what firewall software are you using? what programs are autostarting and are in the taskbar?

Next time it happens, go into Task Manager and to the Processes tab. Sort by CPU Time descending and see which process is taking all of your cpu time.

Could be a wide range of issues. Sometimes Windows Update causes one of the svchost.exe processes to take up a lot of cpu time, I think there was an update recently out of the normal release schedule, make sure you've got all the updates from windowsupdate.com. Do you have an actual anti-virus program? Do not rely on just spybot. You can download install AVG from http://free.grisoft.com for free. Combofix is another great utility for scanning and removing files that commercial anti-virus and anti-spyware do not touch, it's downloaded from here:

Otherwise, follow drebo's instructions and post which process is taking up the cpu time.

Yea I have AVG Free. I did have a failed update to NET.Frame 2.0. Anyway, I restored two weeks back and it's back to normal. I get a 0x643 error on the failed update. Will investigate further.
