Please help. I'm starting to feel like the red headed step child

Gamming System
-----------------------------------------
XPS 600
Pentium D 830 3.0 Ghz
2 Gb 667 Memory- 2 dimms
160 Gb 7200 Rpm Sata/HDD
Dual Nvidia 7800 GTX SLI Graphics Cards
190FP Flat Ultra Sharp LCD

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I copied this thread from a Dell Forum member post. I told him that his 8600 mark is way too low for his system. According to himself, he used latest 81.98 driver and turned everything else off prior running 3dmark05.
Please help me lighten him up.

IIRC, ~8600 would be what you would get with one 7800GTX. You should be more in the 12-15K range with two. Sounds like SLI is either not enabled or not working correctly.

Another possibility is that your settings are wrong. Do make sure you haven't turned on AA/AF, or enabled VSync, or anything like that. Most people also bench at minimum quality settings (sometimes labeled as 'maximum speed' or the like in the drivers).

If you're just trying to convince this guy that 8600 is abnormally low for a 7800GTX, tell him to look at the ORB. There are NUMEROUS 7800GTX SLI scores to compare against.

That is definitely way too low for dual gtx's. I actually got higher fps in GT1 with my primitive x800gto. And, his dual core P4 is scoring lower in the cpu test that my single core A64, so that MAY have something to do with the low performance. But it looks like SLI is either not enabled or something is broken.

I've actually seen a lot of low 3DMark05 SLI scores with the Pentium D's. For some reason they don't perform nearly as well as the AMD chips. Still, 8600 does seem a bit low even with the Pentium D factored in.

Could be the Dell logo on the front too. ;) Seriously though, it seems like Dell came in dead last in a recent test of pre-built computers. They all had basically the same specs but for some reason Dell trailed everyone else by a large margin. I'll have to see if I can find the article.

Do a search in the Video forum for a guy who had an abnormally low 3DMark05 score with an X1800XT. Seems like after a ton of troubleshooting it ended up being the Pentium D he had paired it with.

I only scored 9600 with my Opteron at stock and SLI'd 7800GTs. With only an increase in processor speed to 2.9GHz, my score jumped to 12,600.

The Pentium D is probably dragging your score down, but thats way too low for SLI'd 7800GTX's even with a Pentium D.

Make sure that little box called SLI is check in the Options. Also update drivers to latest version (81.98, 82.12, 83.12).

I doubt a Pentium D could drag the score down that much. And also, why not OC that Pentium D???

And also, why not OC that Pentium D???

because its a dell, and because it would probably throttle from all the heat, even if he could overclock it.

Well is it third party HS time?? :p

Anyway, reinstall drivers is still the OP's best bet.

I can vouch for the p-d. it blows really bad at 3dmark05 for some reason. the average for a 7800gtx with a D820 is high 6 to low 7 k.

the orb, if you search with the following:
Default settings
Pentium D 2800mhz to 3400mhz
7800GTX

highest score is a 7800gtx sli rig at 3000mhz.

3DMark Score: 8881
Title: P5N32-SLI, GeForce 7800GTX*2, 1024 mb DDR2 <--(sli rig)
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3001 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX, 468 MHz / 1197 MHz

3DMark Score: 9623
Title: OC'd Pentium D-830 w/SLI (everything else is stock...
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3300 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX, 468 MHz / 1197 MHz

your system is par.

sorry to break ti to you but 3dmark05 is being cpu limited by your P-D 8xx processor.

How can you tell if the system is SLI enabled? By mobo bios or nvdia driver or both? I ask 'cause I never had SLI.
