is thermal paste required?

I am transfering a P3 700 w/ stock HS/F to another mobo and I noted that it originaly had thermal paste between the CPU and HS/F. I don't have any thermal paste with me right now. Will it be ok to just place the HS/F over the CPU w/o thermal paste? I'll be running this stock w/o over clocking hence the OEM HS/F.

IMHO, no. Wait until tomorrow till you can pick some up locally at any Rat Shack, Worst Buy, Crap USA, mom-n-pop shop.

you really should use some kind of thermal compound

but... there have been several times ive used a hsf with no thermal paste for short periods of time 🙂 just make sure the temps dont get to high

Use some kind of thermal paste or grease, anything is better than nothing almost...because even at default settings it's gonna get a little warm...

dont forget to try your local Circuit Sh*tty or Office Cheapo

MrHappyMonkey, IMHO, wait till you can get some thermal grease or at least a thermal pad, they are between the HS and fan for a reason. I wouldn't want to see you fry your CPU because you were impatient, hope this helps 🙂

Or even you local Staples as they have Antec Thermal Paste.

Don't think office max has anything, at least the ones around here don't. Tubes range from $3-10 I'm guessing.
