DDL gives one of the best acting jobs in history IMO. Yes, it's worth seeing.

And while "Gangs" was a bad film, DDL is the only reason to see that too.

I thought it was pretty crappy. Except, the last 30 minutes or so were EPIC. That, made the movie worth going to see.

wow. you suck at understanding film, much less simple subtext.

Gangs of New York was awful...

I somewhat agree. Its been on TV a few times recently, and while I can watch it, it doesn't really draw me in or anything. There's something about it that bothers me, almost like it presents itself as authentic of the time, but there's a feeling of fakeness to it. Hard to explain, but there's just something about it. Yes, I know the TV version sucks, but I'm fairly certain the things I have issue with won't go away with the DVD/theatrical release. And I think DDL might end up being another one of those cult-following actors that I think both doesn't get enough appreciation by the mainstream but too much appreciation by others.

I agree. watching Gangs of New york almost feels like watching a musical based on the same period. It just doesn't feel authentic at all. Daniel Day lewis is amazing in the film but even his performance seems somewhat fake and over dramatic.

This movie is all about Daniel Day Lewis. Without him the movie would have been nothing. He really deserves the Oscar he got for this role! As a whole the movie isn't perfect but for his performance alone it's worth watching! There are some amazing cinematographic moments in the film. The scene with the oil well on fire and everyone's faces lit by the fire and the deep tribal like music in the background will stay in my mind for a long time! Along with Magnolia it's definitely PT Anderson's best movie(s). Though I still would rate Magnolia just a little higher.

There was a message. Greed and the lust for power/wealth destroys all. A fairly straightforward message actually.

It was stupid, over-the-top nonsense.

Hard to explain? Gangs of New York wasn't authentic at all. Does anyone seriously think New York was anything like that in any time period whatsoever? Have we really degenerated to the point where we could think that there might be even a single grain of truth in that entire movie? Real life isn't a video game, it isn't now and it wasn't back then, god damn.

Maybe a DVD director's cut would help pace out that last little bit the of movie, even though it would be longer.

Agreed.

One of the best movies I've seen in a very long time and DDL gives one of the top 5 acting performances I've ever seen period.

its a pt anderson movie. his are character studies, not moral stories to make you think about its application in current society.

and No Country was the only best picture nominated film with a "message" and most people didn't get it anyway (which is why the ending is getting so much criticism).

that's how a felt about it, too. every thing seemed not-quite real. take out Cameron Diaz and that would cure a lot of its issues, I think.

except that DD Lewis' character is historically real, the events portrayed actually happened, and these were very real gangs and people living at the very real Five Points neighborhood. Other than that...there wasn't much reality to it :)

To me it wasn't the story, so much as the look of the film that made it hard to swallow.

"There Will Be Blood" was pretty good. However I was expecting more blood. It was an excellent movie, intriguing, and lewis' performance was excellent. Less along the lines of "Eraser" with Arnold Schwartzenegger, and more like Kubrick's "A Clockwork Crange"

that, with the parallel "industry" of protestant-based revivalist religion in America. Plainview is a metaphor for the Industrial surge in the United States.

Anyone else notice how the opening sequence is an homage to the opening sequence in 2001, more or less? Beautifully shot.

When DDL got up to accept the best actor oscar... I was STUNNED. He looks and sounds like some frail little wimp!! How the hell does he get that crazy anger for his acting?! Definately deserved the oscar.

I enjoyed it. Great violence, and suspense. The ending though, left a little to be desired.

DDL finds roles to overact.....like Pacino (it takes him years to find such roles, which is why he isn't a prolific actor)

It was a good movie but too slowly paced.

It was a slow year for really good Oscar worthy movies.

In a good year, this movie wouldn't be nominated for "Best Picture".

That said, DDL is a good actor who finds roles that fit his temper.
