Is there such a thing as software-induced temp increase?

I have a Duron 600 overclocked to 900. Because of overclocking, I always have Motherboard Monitor on to monitor the temps. CPU temp stays around 44c to 45c. However, I discovered something very strange. Whenever I load Infopedia 2.0 (a reference suite CD), cpu temp very quickly shoots up to 48c to 49c, and drops back down to 44 to 45 when I close that application.

My questions are: Can a software application cause such a dramatic rise in CPU temp? Also, are my temp readings within normal range? Thanks in advance.

Yes, since fullly loading a cpu should increase temp, and increase it rather quickly.

Secondly, your temps are in a normal range.

I'd second that.

Even if the temp ramped higher for a short period, I wouldn't worry about it

uh huh....happens to everyone buddy. more load u put on ur cpu(ex. opening an application) the harder it works, the hotter it gets.

Thanks for the info. I guess this particular piece of application was written in a way that it never leaves the cpu alone. The temp stays up even if I leave it minimized. I must add it is an older application, so maybe that's why. Am appreciative of everyone's input.
