Is there such a thing as a Californian accent?

I think so...especially in northern California. It's a kind of slurring of words. For example: sister becomes sisser. Its like you're trying to get away with moving your tongue as little as possible when you speak. I know I do it and the DJs at my old high school tend to do it still. Maybe it has something to do with having had braces.....I haven't done any scientific research on it.

Ummm....wtf? I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life and I have NEVER heard of that.

I had a friend from the east coast say that we "talk" like the people on TV. What I don't understand is why people on TRL for example talk like US if they live in NY.

hella hella hella HELLA hella hella HELLA HELLA Cool. I think that automatically tells you where I'm from.

Q: How many bay area people does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Hella!!

Always used to tease friends from San Fran with that joke 🙂
??? I don't get it.

You just have to experience the amount of times and the way they use the word hella. For example I would ask one of my friends "So you think that test was hard?" She would reply with "Hella"

I think the use reached it's peak a few years ago, as I'm not hearing it used as often. Or maybe I've just finally driven the hella out of my friends vocab.

Apparently there is a California accent.

I was in Vancouver w/a girl I met there and she told me she was totally into my California accent.

...and I don't really use the buzzwords you mentioned

As far as I know, we're also the only state to use the word "all" in place of the word "said".
"And then she's all, 'dude'". Or to end a sentence and add an emote. "The he was all...." *act out guy falling over handle bars*.

Yeah, there is, lemme do an impression:

"Yo dude, I'm so stoned right now.... let's go surfing and show off our wire-framed bodies to the STD-inflammed whores working on their skin cancer."

I'd offer a retort to that, but I don't want to get banned. 😉

No, I've lived in SoCal for 14 years. The fact that 70% of the people who live here are from somewhere else probably contributes more to that than anything. My wife is a native though and she has no accent of any kind.

A college buddy of mine from the bay area used to say Hecka. I thought it was lame because he was old enough to say Hell without getting reprimanded. 🙂
