Is there such a thing as a Californian accent?

I don't mean people talking like 'surfers' ("Dude", "Whoah", "Man", etc) or NorCal people saying "Hella" but an accent, like a Brooklyn accent.

I'm curious (... at least this curiosity didn't kill the cat unlike my last one of tub girl). :D

Yes they do have an accent, its not as bad as washington or oregon, but it is noticeable.

I think so...especially in northern California. It's a kind of slurring of words. For example: sister becomes sisser. Its like you're trying to get away with moving your tongue as little as possible when you speak. I know I do it and the DJs at my old high school tend to do it still. Maybe it has something to do with having had braces.....I haven't done any scientific research on it.

We do but it isn't as noticable as other regions. Occasionally I will pronounce something and my friends here in Boston will ask what it was I was saying..like they have any room to talk;)

I think it has to do with the upper-middle-class high school kids trying to project the identity of an urban African american onto themselves. WaSsSup dAwg i DiNk dAt yOoH shud fIne uSh sUm dOpe Ni**A!

It's more of a lazy-I-might-get-bored-before-I-finish-this-sentence-whatever kind of thing or a I'm-so-cool-I'm-not-even-trying thing. Like I said, maybe it's an upper-class-we-all-had-braces-and-had-to-learn-how-to-talk-with-retainers thing, but I've never heard it outside of Cali.

It depends what "region" of California. But because of the different ethnicities, you can't really tell which part of Cali they're from (unlike on the East Coast -- Brooklyn, New England, Boston... etc.)

Yeah. I worked with two girls from California. It was noticeable. Not as apparent as a Boston accent or a Wisconsin accent, but it was there.

Some do in some areas, especially the more rural areas, but I lived in LA for about 20 years and putting aside the surfer dude and valley girl accents, I never thought anyone had a particular accent.

I don't notice anything, but I live in the state. I'm in central California, though, so maybe there's just no accent here.

I think that is more of a generational slang than a regional.

Yes, it's not strong like a southern/nyc/boston accent, but it's there. It's not specific terms (though they're there - such as 'bunk'), but more of a laid back vocal tone.
