Is there something wrong with my Western Digital WD-6400AAKS hard drive?

I'm getting low burst rates, hi random access rates and high cpu usage.

According to Hd tach 3.0.4.0: I'm running the tests after a fresh boot with nothing running.

Burst rate: 115
ave read: 90
random access: 15.7
CPU usage: 15%

Hd tune yields similar results.

Also, looking at the graph the read rate for the 1st 10 or gigs is about 60.

My motherboard is a asus k8s-mx, sata I only, 2 gigs ram, a amd athlon 64 3200(2.2ghz). I think the sata 1 may explain the burst rates(still seems low though) but not the other parts.

Does anyone have any ideas ? should I send it back to newegg?

Is there a better forum on a different website to ask?

Thanks for all your help.

Jason

The AMD Athlon is not as efficient in any task as an Intel Core 2 (which the majority of people with this hard drive have, myself included). So by comparison, it would take a higher percentage of your CPU usage to be equal to the performance of a Core 2. Another thing to consider is that it is a single core processor.

Also your motherboard supports SATA I only. That could also be a factor.

Maybe someone else can chip in with some information here.

And.........NO....
There is no better forum on any part of the internet to ask.

Outdated CPU with a newer hard drive that's looking for SATA II.

Is it noticable or did you just decide to check it out?

If you don't see it decreasing performance, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I was checking the benchmarks and noticed it. Right now it's just a back up drive, it;s going to be the os drive after I'm sure all is well.

I have a sata 1 drive that seems to run "normal" with cpu under 5% and a old eide that runs with 2% cpu.
