I do like the idea of mass voted news/stories/content, but I can't get over the fact that the reddit user base is composed of annoying idiots ...

Digg seems to be nearly out of business, anything else out there?

I don't really know, I don't use any of them (closest is I view Imgur, which has a heavy reddit influence).

Imgur is just a hosting site, reddit and other sites use it too (though obviously reddit uses it a lot).

I thought those pictures on imgur are actual news stories, just my mind was so advanced that it was turning the text into images, like in the Matrix.
