Is there no way to use my own HDD in a 360?

I'm tempted to get a xbox 360 for cheap but cannot get over how much they want for a lousy 20GB HDD.

I have plenty of laptop SATA drives sitting around and would love to be able to get some cheap aftermarket enclosure that I can just put one of those into and get a lot more capacity for a lot less money.

Is there something like that out there?

external hdd's can be used to play music and video from, but the xbox won't write to it (no gamedata).

you can pop open the stock enclosure and replace the 20gb hdd, but i'm not sure of the ramifications. might be the same as having a mod chip as far as M$ is concerned.

You can buy kits off eBay. There's 1 or 2 very specific models of 120gb HDDs that can be used. So the kit includes one of those drives and the enclosure you need.

I know nothing about replacing the drive in the stock enclosure, but if you are going to put any money into buying a 20 GB MS hard drive you might want to consider at least the 60 GB drive. 20 GB fills up plenty fast these days.

You can get a kit for about $60 off ebay, or an assembled 120gb drive for $70. Mind you, these aren't official drives, but they'll do the trick.

I did a self-mod from 20GB to 120GB. Works perfectly - I assume the eBay kits are the same thing, just saving you a few hours of work. There's no way for MS to know if it's not one of theirs since it's the exact same model and has their DRM sectors on it.

To do that you have to get a unique file off an official Microsoft 120 GB drive, don't you? How did you do that?

If wanted to, they could identify the HDDs and how a ton of people have the same (unique)
HDD. Then ban them, if they wanted to, too.

personally i'd rather buy an official drive even though they are overpriced than have my console banned, but that's just me.

I did the 120GB swap, drive was $45. Did some research, so far no one has been banned for the mod. As much as they want for the 120GB drive, you could just about buy another arcade model.

Doubt they would ban people for that.. It would probably cost more to do than they are losing on the drives (then again, there is quite a markup on those things)..

Seems like they are more concerned with software piracy.
