Is there anyway to recover a Gmail you were working on and accidentally clicked an outside link.. navigating away?

You really should edit your mails in a word processor and not on a browser screen. I couldn't count how many texts have I lost the similar way. Also here on Anandtech forums the edited reply messages disappear sometimes when I switch to a different application to check something.
