Is there anyway to mod a temp sensor controlled fan?

I recently purchases a thermaltake A1214 temp sensor controlled fan. My fan grill on my case is really bad so it's making a lot of noise from turbulance. My case temps are high, partially because of it being a mATX and part due to the warm weather. Is there any way to mod the temp sensor so that it will run at a lower speed setting? My system endure the heat, as it has run fine before without the fan.

If you can locate the temp sensing thermistor, snipping one lead, creating an open circuit, will cause the fan to run at its lowest rpm. installing a 20K potentiometer instead of the thermistor will give manual control, and installing that same pot in series with the thermistor will give a temp sensitive setting range at or below stock. Installing it in parallel will give a temp sensitive range at or above stock...

The thermistor's resistance goes down as the temp goes up....

Sometimes installing an old fan ring between the fan and the case will help reduce noise from turbulence. Cut the struts, throw away the fan, install the ring between the fan and case... This will sometimes make a signiicant improvement...

Sometimes the fan can be run at 7v, or even 5v, giving corresponding noise and airflow reductions... may not work very well with temp-sensitive fans, however...

Thanks for the info! I dont' have any old fans lying around or really long screws or bolts either, but I will give snipping one of the leads a try. There are two wires coming out of the temp sensor, one red and one yellow I think. Which one do I snip?

Is there a reason you haven't cut away the grill, and put in a chrome one? This will help tons.

The grill is pretty thick and part of the case. I have neither the tools nor the motivation to cut it out right now.

Snip either wire to open the circuit, insulate the ends with some tape....
