Is there anyway to get around the 1-year subscription to NAV definitions?

So I've installed Norton antivirus on my computer, but after a year it says the virus definition subscription will expire and NAV will cease to function. Is there anyway around this besides continually uninstalling and reinstalling it? Thanks!

It isn't NAV that will stop working, it is the virus definitions that will not be renewed. Live Update will continue to provide you with program updates for NAV, but unless you buy a new subscription you won't be protected against viruses that were discovered AFTER your subscription lapsed.

If you are like most of us here and reformat/reinstall more than once a year, that will also do it. I recently reformatted one of my test machines that the subscription had run out on and after I reinstalled NAV 2002 (purchased from Staples, on a hot deal from this forum), it connected and updated and will now expire 7/26/04. I'm not saying you should reformat/reinstall to extend the life of your sub, but if you are reformatting it anyway....

I thought after your subscription runs out automatic LiveUpdate stops working but you can still download the virus definitions manually.

Yeah, you don't have to reinstall the OS, simply reinstall NAV. BTW, suscription renewal isn't that expensive.

Yep - LiveUpdate stops working but you can download the definition file manually and install it.

I don't know if they fixed it yet, but i used to set the date like 2020 and install it, then set it to the real date, and i have like 20 years of updates :p

The problem with that is a lot of software (especially logging programs) use the time to organize the files. If you start messing around with the date, you get crazy logs.

The other thing is that buying a new version of Norton is cheaper than renewing, IIRC.

That doesn't work because a) echo is on the wrong side of the pipe, and b) format command specifically looks for a keypress, it doesn't read from stdin.

You want to use format c: /Q /U

Unfortunately later versions of the command check and see that C: is a non-removable disk and ignore the /U flag in that case.

as long as we're dabbling in "forbidden" waters, i.e. reformat/reinstall to get a subscription time-expiration program to work again, I have always wondered what was done to trial versions to make them not work after a certain point. Seems to me that a software company takes a huge risk making a 30 day full-function trial version available, that will behave like the real (retail) thing by just entering a code once you've paid. I have bought lots of software; I have also reformatted/reinstalled my share too, i.e. NAV.

Where do the trail versions "flag" your system so you can't just uninstall/reinstall them? The registry?

Always wondered.....

bah humbug, you knew what i meant... in any case, i fixed that and i do believe it will work.. at least it does with:

echo y | del *.*

That's not been my experience. When your subsciption expires Live update will not download any more virus definitions, although will keep the program updated.

If you download the virus definitions manually, they will not install unless you have a valid subscription.

For 2 years now I've received my Norton Systemworks free after rebates. Where? Amazon.com.

>Pay for it.

well I did pay for it but NIS 2003 is still in shrink rapped right now but I have NIS 2002 installed just waiting for my new system before doing a clean install so having both 2002 and 03 I figure gives me the right to LiveUpdate. Anyway what you can do is just roll the date back to your subscription period and do a live update and then switch it back to normal. There's also a file you can delete that will take care of the daily reminders.

Oh yes there is. And that's all I'm gonna say. :) ;)

P.S. What is up with all the reinstalling and date roll backs? You guys need to get a little more...sophisticated. ;)

That is correct. My g/f's NAV expired, so I DLed the DAT and it wouldn't install. I tried installing with the clock set forward, but it caught on sometime and reset to the year date. Bastards.:|
