Your system is totally underpowered to play any of those games. It's not the fact that games evolved so fast you couldn't keep up. I have been recommending having AT LEAST 512mb to people since I had a P3. I'm suprised you have the patience to even use your own computer while running on XP. I have many systems that only have 512mb or 768mb of ram that can play games. Not the best Image Quality but it will run. I had an 5900ultra FX that you can get for cheap now that ran Farcry at a decent IQ with only 768mb of ram.

If by turn around you mean go pull a blanket over your head and hibernate for about 5 years then yes, games do advance a lot in that time.

Edit: You do not need 2gb or 4gb to play Sims 2, Doom 3, etc....

I have played farcry fine on this system before! It played very smooth!

Were talking about running games with 256mb if you haven't noticed...
Anything beyond AIM like photoshop and etc are going to lag profusely. Install times are going to be hell also. I know a couple people that still only have 256mb of ram. It is pure madness trying to navigate even after having a few programs opened (aim, browser, file transfer from external).

I seriously doubt that......considering the levels are huge. It might have been good if you expected PS1 graphics. My friend plays WoW and she has the same CPU as you but with 512ddr 2100. She also has a radeon 9600xt. It lags a lot for her even on low settings. Especially when she is in a big city.

While you still want to strip down unnneded services not just to save RAM, but to free up CPU cycles wasted with that process just idling there, but you also want to do it so security threats can't use it. If a given bug uses a service you've got disabled and don't use, it's out of luck. Most infections happen within 24 hours of the bug existing because the update to prevent and remove it or even scan for it doesn't exist.

Smart people try to put off buying a new rig as long as possible and posts I see that say...

look at my new box!

don't impress me in the least. Go get a Gig of RAM all on two sticks.

Are you hooked up to a router? If you are, don't run a firewall. You don't really need antispyware running either. Switching to Windows 2000 helps a lot too. You should really add at least another 256MB of RAM though.

I've installed Ubuntu (Linux) on my PII eMachine that had 256MB RAM. The machine uses about 40% of the physical ram when playing mp3's.
Linux doesn't require loads of RAM to do the normal everyday jobs and can play games too.

But a windows gaming machine requires more resources and soon the move to more expensive hardware is required. Be ready to invest the dollars when the level of gaming goes up. Your choice.....

I have a P3 800mhz machine with only 128MB of RAM. I'm using Windows 2000, and I use it as a web server. It runs very smoothly. I can even run a software firewall on it while doing other stuff.

The fact hardware will always increase in price is false unless you're talking about inflation. My $250 rig will play most games out there. Some people need to expensive rigs to feel good about themselves too so its different for everyone.

basically if you run xp, and have 256mb of ram, um... uninstall the virusscanner and well learn how to be more careful online. especially if it is norton or mcafee.
