Is there anything wrong with popping your ears?

Whenever I fly, I pop my ears when I get back down by holding my nose closed and blowing, pops em everytime. Someone told me this is bad for your eardrums to do this, any truth to that?

There is nothing wrong with doing that. Matter of fact scuba divers are taught to do that to equalize the pressure in their inner ear that way. After I became a diver, I do the same thing when I have to fly. The alternative is to have lots of pressure build up and possibly rupture ear drum that way.

Would it be better for them to remain in the "un-popped" state for the duration of the flight? :p

Muted sounds?

Plugging my nose and blowing makes things louder for me. I got into the habbit of doing it whenever I listen to headphones, heh.
