is there anything that has to be done to make games properly work behind a router?

You put the computer in the DMZ, and you use software Firewall that alert you to any attempt to open a port (like Symantec Security suit). You start the game, in the first few minute it will alert you to all the ports exchange, every time the Alert relates to the Game software you click permit, and after few attempts you are happily gaming and properly protected. At the End of the game you move the computer back behind the Router. Done.

that has to happen all the time? dam, is there any other way, i mean can't i like just permit what ever ports the game uses, so that the firewalls know it's not a problem and don't do anything about it?

Depending on what type/brand router you buy, you will be able to open some ports or a range of ports for some apps. As mentioned in the link provided by rw120555.

I would add that Jack's advice is most times right on the mark, and well taken.....

btw jack, u'll notice i keep complaining/whining about all these secruity features these routers add to the connection, which cause probs for games etc. would i be better off with just using a hub? or is that a pain to configiure

I'm not a gamer, but many on this board are, and my impression is that it isn't as hard as you seem to fear. For many games, the ports you need to open are already documented; see my earlier link and also this. To see how you could handle gaming on a Netgear, see here.

If you want to keep things simpler and don't mind spending more money, consider a 2wire homeportal; it is pre-configured to easily work with several games. Whether yours is included, I don't know.

And, if you don't want to go to any hassle, I suppose you just put yourself in the dmz and don't use Jack's suggested security features; just take your chances and leave your computer unprotected. A little risky, I suppose, but no more risky than not using a router at all, which is what you'd be doing with a hub. But me, I'd follow some security procedures, at it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal, especially once you know what is needed to make a particular game work.

my fear is, that i am sharing a connection with my brothers computer and mine, and he plays alot of games, and i do not want to risk messing up his games playing 😱

my smc barricade allows me to leave some ports open. I think i can set some ports and specify them for gaming or whatever.

No wonder you are so worried, your life is on the line here 🙂 So what is your current setup? Do you just take turns using the connection, or what?

lol, well not on the line, but it's kinda rude of me to mess up his computer

at the moment he only has his(well it's not really his, he didn't buy it), which just has a cable modem goin into one NIC. iam about to build my self a new computer (my old one was too messed up to have a broadband connection

Somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me he has no protection against outside attacks now, so if you just left his computer in the dmz all the time he'd be no worse off and you would then have access to the internet. But, you're both better off if he is willing to take the steps necessary to open up ports as needed.

The only times I've had trouble with two PC's behind a NAT running through cable are when both PC's try to connect to the same GAME server at the same time. You generally have to get one of the clients to connect using a non-standard port.

As far as one person surfing and one gaming...no problems. Put the gaming rig in the DMZ and the other fully behind the firewall/router/nat and you're good to go. Normal surfing will not cause problems with his gaming. BUT if you fire off a download of any significant size he WILL feel it and probably start bitching as he takes rockets in the face from time travelers that exist 300ms in the future.
