IS there anything I can buy to remove dust from the air?

Look for HEPA filters, they work quite well, but the cost of filters can be pricey. Ionic filters are next to useless.

nothing as effective. and certainly nothing for the price.

you can put it in a closet when people are over.

If I were to open the window here, not only would I likely get bugs, but the dust from the Phx air would make my apartment worse for dust.

Change the filters in your AC/heating/ventilation system as required.

Vacuuming is a good thing to do, but alone it won't do much to help with a dust problem or alleviate allergies. Vacuums don't pull dust out of the air, only what has settled in the carpet. In keeping with that, it's probably a good idea to rent a carpet cleaner and clean your carpet thoroughly once in a while. Be sure to use some fabric softener afterwards to remove the static charge from the carpet, it will keep it from attracting dust particles and keep it clean longer.

Using a static charged duster to dust shelves and so forth would help as well.

Ultimately, though, the only way to take it out of the air is with a filter system like HEPA filter.

Still need to mop or use one of those swiffer things.

Hardware floors will get dusty as well, just be more visible. They are easier to clean though.
