Sun makes excellent CPU's, and the HP-UX solutions are also quite fast and extremely stable. :) (Of course, if you want to spend less on the computer than you would for a rather large house, AMD is the way to go! Or you could use Intel if you absolutely must and really want to pay more than you have to...) ;)

Not if you want x86 compatible CPUs.

The latest VIA/Cyrix processor running at 500MHz+ performs like a P2-300.....mediocre performance.

....Power PC.....Alpha.....but not very commercial....I recall also some other Russian Processors that were never sold commercially...and a "Neo Geo" something that is used
in Slot-PC ( a form of industrial computers.... )

...why do you think intel managed to built a monopoly so strong?!??!

There's also the Crusoe (good for portables, very economic in terms of power drains). Cyrix is cool tho not as fast mhz-wise.. they are the first company to do .13 micron manufacturing tho (e.g. Cyrix,AMD,Intel)

Then, there's also this thing called the Brain. Most powerful of 'em all ;-)

Via is making chipset for Intel/AMD.
Has been doing it forever.
They recently bought Cyrix, and they are beginning to make their own. But those suck.
That's why.

Probably isn't 850MHz ,+ (assuming it isn't a totally new cpu) the FPU still sucks bigtime.
I suppose the cheap price will allow people on a very tight budget to buy a cheap PC ,but if it were a friend or family member of mine in that position I would advise them on buying a 2nd PII system instead, much better £/performance.

sorry..for asking so much retarded questions...
but um..
i just dont get...like...how DO WE REALLY know how good those CPUs are....?
do u know wut i mean?
like people are saying how AMD is BETTER than intel...and so forth..and another couple of people are saying intel is better...and blah blah blah....
okay...before i heard AMD was better for gaming...and intel was better for office type of work...
now with the new p4's...
it is different now...
p4 is better than amd in gaming but not in office type of work...
i mean...
how DO we REALLY know...it is better...i know in games..you can tell by the fps.....and so forth...like...i have a p2,p3....duron machine..
they all "feel" the SAME?!?!?!?
i know the price the different..but...u know?...
WE cant really tell!!!!
and cyrix used to compete with AMD about 3 years ago!!!
am i right!

P4 better in games? with the exception of Q3, so far the Athlon is better in games ,check this review out of the P4 vs Athlon.

how DO WE REALLY know how good those CPUs are....?

Read reviews!:p;) ,here's a new review of the Cyrix 0.15 micron, its added 64k L2 cache but is otherwise the same crappy CPU!eg

Well, as the Quake III Arena scores show, the FPU of the Samuel2 Cyrix III seems to still be a thorn in the chip's side. Quake III Arena, as well as other 3D intensive applications and games are very FPU intensive. Usually, Quake III Arena can give us a glimpse of a FPU's strength

What a surprise! ;)

and cyrix used to compete with AMD about 3 years ago!!!
Yeah but Cyrix still had the worst FPU performance (except IDT).

how DO we REALLY know...it is better...i know in games..you can tell by the fps.....and so forth...like...i have a p2,p3....duron machine..
they all "feel" the SAME?!?!?!?

They will do as long as the frame rate doesn't drop below about 30FPS ,much below that the eye can detect 'jerking' of the picture
