Yes there are other similar devies. But they usually require you to control from the client, not from your computer. It's not the seemless integration from your computer to your stereo that AirPort Express offers.

Lots of them let you control the device from your computer (which is mostly pointless, IMO). As a matter of fact, the Squeezebox I posted allows you to control it from any PC with a browser.

ok, if you don't like iTunes I can understand it but it is another step, another program, that you have to go through to control your music. If you want the features of Airport Express, not just another client on your wireless network, there aren't any other good alternatives. If all you want is the audio, at that point you might as well just get a wireless transmitter and reciever just for it since it will be a lot cheaper.

i like to sit in my living room with my laptop. why would i want to pick up a remote control when i can use my computer?

the squeezebox looks nice, but all i really need is a wireless replacement for a cable that would connect my computer to my stereo, and i don't believe my best solution is going to cost $300.

No. If all you want to do is replace cables with wireless, then all you need is something like this link. There are a ton of similar products out there. Just search for wireless audio or similar. X10 stuff is pretty decent too depending on what your needs are. I picked up a nice set of wireless recievers and transmitters for video and audio for around $30 on the FST forums.

Not that your suggestion was anymore simple or cheaper. dolph wasn't clear on the features he was looking for.

I never said it was. He said he didn't like iTunes. I gave him something similar that was iTunes independent. Just give up dude, you don't have a leg to stand on.

Meh, neither do you. Bridge + print server + audio out. Any alternatives?

sorry, i should have also said that i don't want to get a second transmitter for my laptop (first being 802.11g). when i had a desktop, i used the same x10 stuff with mixed results.

Make another thread, stop hijacking this poor guy's.

This is true. We've already answered his question anyways.

There really isn't much. It's the whole concept of pull/pushing content, all 802.11x recievers I have seen so far have been the controller, not a reciever like the AirPort Express. There have been some announcements recently about wireless speakers that use 802.11x and possibly just recievers as well so you might be seeing some products soon.
