Is there anything comparable to the VIA EPIA M10000???

Since I need a motherboard CPU setup, with as much onboard as possible, small footprint, and low power consumption, I was wondering if you could help me out...

The thing is, that I am wanting to install this in a car, therefor I want a Motherboard, a CPU, connected to an LCD display with touch screen overlay... about 10"...

Now I kind of liked the EPIA boards, but performance is suppose to be terrible, and it does not need all that much less power than a Celleron... reguarding to this

Also you have to stick with this processor, and I am not sure if this format is continued (170mm by 170mm)...

Now this is basically what I need...

a Motherboard, with

- onboard video
- s-video out (could also be composite video out)
- onboard audio
- Firewire
- USB

Now if you need anything else as information, post and let me know...

I really appreciate...

What are you hoping to use a car PC for? That Via M1000 board can play DVDs with around 70-80% CPU usage in XP (tested that last week at work 🙂). It is probably the lowest power consumption/highest performing system around at the moment. You can probably get a laptop that has comparable power usage, or you would have to build an older system using an older celeron or something.

But if you just want to play music, watch movies, play simple or older emulated games the Via 1Ghz board should be great. A coworker of mine tossed it into one of those Cubid 2699R cases with a laptop style 55W power brick. The case has 12V DC in so it should work in a car with or without an additional inverter.

If you need more performance I'd build something else but unless you plan on playing 3d games with a decent standalone graphics card in the car the Via's are good choices.

Thank you,
the only problem I still kind of have is if there are going to be boards of that size in future, or if this is just a via size that no other companies would produce???

I appreciate

here are a whole bunch of comparable products:

http://us.shuttle.com/shop.asp?cat_id=22

these are the motherboards that go inside of Shuttle SSF systems, available for sale direct from Shuttle. you best bet is probably that FV25... it can accomodate a Tualatin Celeron and has a whole bunch of integrated goodies. also good would be the FX41 AMD board with a 1.5V T-bred A 1700+ for $42 from newegg. probably one of the lowest power AMD chips out there and packs a serious wallup in performance. these are technically FlexATX not MiniITX boards, so they are a tad bigger, but they are much more powerful.

In truth, I don't think the form factor is going away anytime soon. One visit to www.mini-itx.com should convince you that it has it's place in the market, at least among enthusiasts. There are also pre-built systems based on the VIA boards designed for car use at:

http://www.mini-box.com

If you don't want the VIA chip, (and still need further convincing about the popularity of the form factor) here is a brand new Mini-ITX board from Commell Systems that has the Intel 845PE chipset and will take a P4 or Celeron:

http://www.commell-sys.com/Product/SBC/LV-670M.HTM

Granted, this may not meet your power consumption requirements, but as one who has done some serious digging into the Mini-ITX and SFF world, I can tell you there are definately options, and there will only be more as days go by.

The newer M10000 boards will be marketed as having the "Nehemiah" core, as opposed to the "Ezra T" core of the older one. It's also supposed to have S3 UniChrome graphics instead of the "Castlerock" graphics on the old boards.

The Nehemiah boards have been out for a while, but they haven't been made available until recently, probably because VIA sorta "surprised" everyone with an updated M10000 so soon after the release of the previous one, and vendors had to clear out the existing stock...but I digress. One place you can get it is

www.idot.com

To further digress, with all that said, the M10000 requires active cooling and may not be ideal for a dashboard-sized enclosure (Verily, it may not even *fit* in one). You may run into this with the Commell as well. Even though it's a little pricey, I still think the Mini-Box M-100 is the best option for a dash computer at the moment.

Then agian you could mount the box in the trunk and just put the display on the dash...okay, I'm going to stop before digress all the way to hell. 😀
