I just wondering if there's something wrong with smart media.
because when i talk with most people that i know who buy digital camera, they always prefer compact flash and sometimes they said "stay away from smartmedia" :)
does anybody know why? is it really compact flash is much better? :)

I think compact flash is cheeper...and maybe faster, but those are the only reasons I could see.

The size of Smartmedia supported by a device like a camera or Mp3 player is
dependent on the firmware of the device. So if I go out and buy a 128MB Smartmedia
card for my camera, it will only work properly the firmware supports it.
CompactFlash doesn't have this problem.

peang, SM tends to run more expensive than SM, plus, It's pretty easy to snap a SM card in half, much harder w/ CF, hope this helps.

I see,
so the problem with smartmedia is not because of more fragile or something like that then? :)

The only real drawback is that the device has to support the SM card size.

It really is a kick ass form factor.

Here are the negatives:

SM devices are limited by the firmware so if a digital camera only has support for 128MB and a 1GB SM card comes out, the new memory will either not work with it or is limited to 128MB. The devices may be flash upgradeable but that is a big maybe.

SM cards have the contacts exposed so constant pulling in and out of devices will wear the contacts out. I've had this happen to lots of my friends.

SM cards are currently limited to 128MB. CF has I believe a 640MB card and a 1GB coming out this spring.

SM cards run slightly more expensive but not that much more.

Positives:

Physical size.
