Is there anything as a consumer that you can do about obnoxiously LOUD commercials?

In the old days it was fun to rip out the high beam switch (the old motorcars had them on the floor before they moved to the steering column) from a junked motorcar and install it below the floor in front of the couch. When some blabber mouth came on you could just stomp them out! It was just a matter of running a single pair of wires from the switch to the speaker on the telly so it broke the circuit.

Today we have remote controls with mute buttons.

It's also possible to have your tuner fitted with a device that listens for the change in carrier when a commercial break begins and lowers the volume or plays music, etc.

I used to hate it but for the past two years, I tivo everything and never watch Live TV. I skip the commercials.

Philips-Magnavox brand TVs -- not Philips, not Magnavox, but Philips-Magnavox -- all come with upper volume limits and adaptive gain, called SmartSound. It works great, keeps pretty much everything at the same volume level without screwing up differences in volume. Back in the day you could also accomplish the same thing with a halfway decent stereo system.
