GMail invites are free. You can get them on your phone now so sending out invitations are almost completely useless.

I only use it for sending attachments. I use a private email server for my personal email.

I started using Gmail when they offered such a huge amount of space. My ISP email was still pathetically small and I had to create multiple of those. Gmail solved the problem and I was hooked immediately. Yahoo is pretty good also, but Gmail was there.

* Practically unlimited storage (2.6 GB ATM)
* Google Search your Email archive
* Free POP3 & SMTP (the SMTP is very hard to find on free accounts)
* No "Get your free acount.." tagline BS on the email you send
* Auto draft saving
* The Archive system (as opposed to deleting) is great IMHO
* Filters and labels galore
* Very good spam & phishing filter that you can train

geez, what more do you want :p

PM me and I'll send you a link to setup an account (or anyone else who wants one)

Yahoo blows Gmail away

Gmail is another fad like the iPod... it trys to present itself as one of the "hip" things to have.. its like, if you dont have Gmail, you aren't cool

Kidding? Yahoo's spam filter is MUCH better, I have yet to see ONE Sober-variant email, I get 20-30 a DAY in my GMail account.

I prefer using my GMail to regular Outlook mail these days. Virtually instant searching of all my mail is great, and so is conversation folding.

To each their own I guess. I get about 70 or 80 pieces of spam a day and Gmail catches them all with virtually no false-positives. But maybe it took a few days to "train" the filter. Don't remember.
On the other hand my wife uses Yahoo and gets about the same amount of spam and I would say three or four a day make it to her inbox.
As with most things though YMMV.

Wow, who the hell do you people give your email addy out to? 70-80 a DAY??? I get no spam in Gmail at all. Like, not just none in my inbox, but none coming into the account period.

I am not planning on using Gmail.

I prefer pop3 mail.
Preferring POP3 is not a reason against using Gmail. Gmail HAS POP3.

Heh, it's my wifes fault. One day she got upset about the three or four pieces of spam we were getting a day so she went though my account and hers (Yahoo!) and did the 'Remove Me' process on all the spam emails she could find
