Is there any way to view quicktime .mov files using Media Player?

Topic says it all. Any CODECs or plugins or whatever available? I don't wanna download quicktime.
Thanks!

in Media Player's preferences, you can select what formats should be associated with it. I'm pretty sure .mov is in the list.

File association is different from actually being able to play certain .mov's. WMP can play certain ones, just ones decoded for QT can't play with WMP (in stock form)

The problem I'm having is playing mov files. WMP plays mov files, but not those that are encoded in the QT format. Its not a file association thing.

The thing is I noticed that WMP has Quick Time as one of it's playable formats but quicktime files won't play. I agree M$ probably did this on purpose.

I have to agree with Bart. Remember when WMP used to play QuickTime and RealPlayer?

Microsoft licensed their codecs.

Then guess what happened? You got it. Apple and Real upgraded/changed those codecs and didn't license THOSE to Microsoft. WMP would probably still play those old streams just fine, but anything newer than QT3 or RealPlayer 5 won't work. They probably could hack something together, but they might face charges by the respective companies.

i think apple and real decided not to give rights to M$ to implement their codec in WMP for obvious reasons 🙂

Needless to say, it would have been incredibly stupid of them to cut off their source of income. Or in Real's case, their only source of income. 🙂

Your right. WMP plays quick time 1 and 2 movies. I guess that's where Apple drew the line because anything after Quick Time 2 won't play.

Quicktime is another example of the mindset of Apple. Exclusive Inferior technology. Other formats, mpeg2, divx, and even avis are a lot better and a lot more compatible then mov. But apple only wants you to play mov files on their media player, which looks nice, but funtionality wise, much inferior to WMP, or even the winamp nicemc plugin. As for real, I see them going down the drain pretty soon too. Sure, they're the first to come out with streaming internet media, but the microsoft streams are a lot better in quality then realaudio/video. And the real software is bloated POS. Sure it was a decent solution when everyone was on modem connections, but as more and more people go on broadband, better quality codecs are going to take over.

Actually, Real seems fairly codec agnostic on the player side and will incorporate anything popular when able to. They make their moolah off servers and streamed advertisements and making the players more universal is the key I guess. Until recently, they had to develop their own codecs because pre-existing stuff was crap but now, for instance, they have a deal with Sony to incorporate ATRAC for MiniDisc quality audio.
