so I bought a 60 gb iPod today... I've spent all day loading about 40 gigs of music onto it, editing the file tags, setting up playlists, etc. just mind-numbing organizational work.

but now I'm wondering -- is there any way to create an image of my ipod exactly as I have it now (presumably onto a hard drive or spread across multiple dvd's) so that, should I lose my iPod or if it were to break, I can just restore the image onto a new one?

It's called iTunes. You should have done your organizational work there and then moved it over.

Make 4453MB RARs of all your music/images/whatever and burn them individually to DVD. Store all the DVDs together.

with itunes you jsut plug it in and it will format the ipod (if you say yes to the prompt) and take care of everything.
