Or WS. I cant say in words how much of a blunder it is in this time and age, to not have WS in an alleged "AAA" title. Not only to you not get true WS, but you actually lose about 25% of the screen going wide, because it cuts off from the top and bottom, and gives you nothing on the sides. You're suppose to gain game, not lose it.

No AA, and no WS, is just silly. To be nice about it.

I agree! However, it's still an awesome game.

No widescreen? Are you playing the demo or the full game? I'm playing the full game and it goes up to 1920x1200.

It cuts off the top and bottom, and doesnt add anything to the sides, to give you "widescreen". You lose about 25% of the game, going wide.

I don't know about you, but my mouse goes forward and backward, as well as right to left ;)

I read this like 5 times trying to figure out what you are talking about... I thought maybe it was a hidden joke or something, but nope, no sign of that... /confused.

Edit ** I get it now... Yeah, lets poke out one of your eyes because you can just make up for it by turning your head... No need to have two eyes! Two eyes FTL!

I just meant that you can look up and down, it's not like you'll never see those areas of the game. I know it is cutting it off, but in reality it doesn't affect gameplay much.

The demo supported 1680x1050 widescreen for me. Looked just fine.

Nice! I'm waiting on my new 20" monitor to show up (recommended by xtknight of course), whose native res is 1680x1050. I want widescreen gaming!

I posted this in the other Bioshock thread, but it would seem to be appropriate here as well:

A little update for AA and Vista... From http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=43819

XP: Forcing FSAA via the CP should work.

Vista: Add " -dx9mode" to the targetbox of your Bioshock shortcut. It should read something like this:

"X:\Games\BioShock Demo\Builds\Release\Bioshock.exe" -dx9mode

Now force AntiAliasing Compatibility-Mode "00000045: Rainbow Six Vegas" in nHancer and set your desired FSAA mode. This should work, but the drawback is, no dx10...

Seems to work, although I had the game crash on exit...

edit: it pretty much consistently crashes the game on exit for me when I do this... Plus, the game looks a lot worse, mainly the textures. The lack of jagged edges is nice, but not worth the lack of stability.

I love the allure of WS gaming, since really, that's all it is...

The majority of games still don't really support WS.

Sure, they may scale in width, but nearly always at the expense of stretched distorted menus, HUDs.

Not to mention BS like Bioshock or EA where WS is just 4:3 with the top & bottom chopped off, making it actually less viewing area than non WS.
Or again, using Bioshock as an example, FOV being seemingly hardcoded garbage, which makes for silliness.

WS is nice & all, woohoo, blah blah, but the simple fact is that games are still rarely truely designed for it.
I still find it amazing how many games require hax just to get WS working...goes to show how WS oriented things really are

BTW, if you hadn't seen his post already:

So basically, stupidity is required to get AA working for me in Vista.
Thanx 2K. :frown:

I thought that the 'Games for Windows' logo required games to support WS natively and a min of 4xAA... You would think that MS would be pissed that you can either run its old OS or disable DX10 in its new 'Gamer OS' to get AA working on a major title running on the Unreal 3 Engine.

The wide screen thing is actaully an oddity to me really... Didn't we get wide screen TV's so we could watch movies the way the artists intended for them to be? Why do the video game artists seem to disagree the movie making artists...? Even more of an oddity, why do they show us preview images of their game in wide screen if that isn't their vision?

Nah new rule changed ;(

Epic made Microsoft change its rule on Games for Windows. Now game don't have to support 360 controller or have AA or be Vista only or even have to be DX10 only title. Epic got everything they want and now they are trying to make Microsoft open XBOX Live so they can let their UT mods run on 360 with UT2007.

It does support native widescreen resolutions. I don't think there's any requirement for for widescreen fov's or perspectives.

In any case, you could argue that the traditional fov's for most first person shooters is TOO HIGH. It's usually been at least 90 degrees, which is unrealistically high considering the typical distance from which you view your monitor from. Even with a fairly large widescreen monitor, your actual viewing angle is unlikely to exceed 60 degrees. The decision, in the past, for such a large FOV was clearly for gameplay reasons and not realism. Now that games are striving for more realism in their graphics, I think "cramped" (at least to most people) views will actually become the norm.

Even though the bottom and top are cut off, I think the widescreen in Bioshock is just fine, it's actually more "realistic" than what we are used to seeing in games. The problem, of course, occurs when you compare it to a regular aspect ratio screenshot. You shouldn't lose things when going widescreen. I actually think the 5:4 shot Ackmed posted shows that it's non-widescreen that's flawed (it displays TOO MUCH).

I really didn't notice it not being widescreen when playing the game. My little brother said there was a problem, and I said I selected the 1680*1050 resolution, so what could the problem be. He then said nothing anymore and both of us didn't notice the lack of widescreen. So if it doesn't support widescreen, I guess it's not really bothering me.

Then be happy with it. But its not giving your tru WS. You're getting less game by going wide.

But there is hope, some people are working on it, and apparently having success; http://www.hardforum.com/showt...d.php?t=1215558&page=3

So, basically the 'Games for Windows' logo now means, "It should run on Windows, provided what NV/ATI write a driver for it, and um... about AA... well, your mileage may vary... I bet someone will post something about that in a fourm."

It supports widescreen resolutions, but not native widescreen resolutions. The resolutions are native standard resolution and they are cropped to make them fit on a widescreen (which is better then stretching). If there were native widescreen however, they would have to have the sides cropped to fit a standard resolution - just like a movie.

nitromullet, i tried adding the -dx9 thing in the shortcut, but i don't have hHancer.

Not only did it not work (still no AA being applied), but my whole system locked up upon attempting to exit the game.

Garbage fix indeed, as it doesn't even work for me, but certainly works for effing things up.

Sorry guy, but while your issue does exist, the game DOES support widescreen. Not fake, not lazy, not bugged. You can still take issue with it, though. Courtesy of M-W:

Main Entry: wide-screen
Function: adjective
: of or relating to a projected picture whose aspect ratio is substantially greater than 1.33:1
