Is there any way possible to share this DSL connection?

I am interested in getting dsl service from bellsouth which is offering it for around $40 a month. The question that I have is for this price they want to supply a free modem which is a USB model and I was wondering is their anyway to share this connection with the other two computers in my house. I will probably run win2k or win98 on all of these boxes. I was told at one time that in order to share the connection I had to have a pci dsl modem that had a cat5 output on it so I could run that line back into a nic that was in the box that had the modem or to a router to serve the other boxes. I would appreciate any help that you guys could give.

Just add a NIC to the gateway box (the one the USB modem will be plugged in to), run Cat5 from it to a switch, attach the other systems to the switch, and install proxy software such as the ICS in Windows, or Sygate.

In the alternative, you could run the cable to a hardware router and do the same thing without software.

BTW, USB modems suck bad. Any way you can get out of that?

Hey, I have bellsouth dsl and Have used the usb modem for about 2 months. If you only have one compouter I would strongly not encourage you to use it. It slowed my computer down so Bad I couldn't even play Unreal Tourney on it with lowering the graphics. As far as speed, I get about 1.8 meg per second download speed. And yes, I do have the normal service pack, 1.5 meg per second. I just have a very good quality line and a lot of tweaks. But about the USB modem. You have two options. Option one, Is to build a server and just run the modem on that (which I have done for 2 months. Or, call bellsouth dsl, BE VERY POLITE, and tell them that the usb modem just bogs down your system so bad you can hardly use it. Simply request that they send you a pci modem. Don't let them tell you this does not work. I DID THIS EXACT PROCESS ON FRIDAY AND I WILL HAVE MY PCI MODEM THIS WEEK!!!!!! So give it a shot!..

I just looked at the back of my computer to see where the nic that @home had installed was, and see whare the modem was connected. SUPPRISE! usb cable modem, no NIC. wondered why it was running slower...

that wont really be a prob for that much longer. I am getting a router to split the connection.

wait a sec, (does usb modem go into router?!?!) hmmm. better check that one out....

Check with Bell South to see if they offer an option for a Cisco675 external router(modem)and nic. With that, you can add something like a SMC "barricade" router/switch/firewall and a nic in your other computer.

This is really the best way to go, if you can afford it. Got a "special" on the Cisco from Qwest/USWest, the barricade and extra nic from Onvia.com, total cost almost $300 up front.

Now if they can just get the line set up...
