I'm about to make a fairly large purchase from a personal seller ($750.) Is there any way i can protect myself through paypal? If I pay via CC but through paypal, will it help in the event that I get burned?

I actually have both in arms reach but I don't think they will help in this situation.

First method is to do whatever you can to make sure the seller is legit. Where are you buying the item from?

PayPal does have a buyer protection option that you may be able to use, you have to pay an extra fee for it though.

When making the purchase, use a credit card. If for some reason, you do get ripped off (Hope Not), you can call your CC Company and have them do a chargeback. This is a must on every single large buyer purcahse I've made, but I've never had to do it..

Actually, you only get $175 back, they keep $25 as a processing fee

Acording to your TOS you can't do a chargeback with your credit card like this. If you do they will close your acccount and put the chargeback amount in collections.

Nobody should EVER use paypal for anything of significant value. The paypal terms of service basically spell out that you've given away any chance you have of recovering anything if something bad happens.

Bottom line, use your credit card. If the person can't take a credit card, find another vendor that will. Paypal is fine for a $10 item, but when you're talking about more expensive items, it's terribly risky.

Thats my philosophy as well. I'm on my own out there so I just won't buy something that costs more then I'm willing to risk losing.
