Is there any surefire test for a broken toe?

My pinky toe hurts like mother and I'm not sure what to do. I'm here at work, and walking hurts now (I was walking earlier and it was fine). I stubbed it about 8 hours ago, and it's just now hurting badly.

I wrapped it up with paper towels and tape. 😉

What can I do?

Try kicking something. If you hear a crunching or cracking noise, I'd head over to the hospital.

Well, I'm trying to determine if it's broken or just really sprained or whatever. I've had a broken foot before, but it swelled up. This hasn't swollen yet.

I've broken many a toe. Sometimes after the first kicking into wall or whatnot, I get a stinging pain that goes away. A few hours later, it will actually start killing. It may just be partially fractured. Whenever I broke the toe, it swelled a little, and bruised.

Based on my past experiences, it would probably swell and possibly bruise if it were broken. (Although, there's always the chance I'm wrong.) Severe bruises can still be very painful, even though the toe isn't actually fractured.

Just tape the toe down if you really think it's broken. Even if you to get it x-rayed positive, taping it down is all they can do even with all the advancements in medical science.

That's what I did. I broke all of my toes and all of my foot, and that swole up to like a basketball. I'm going to take some pain killers. 😉

Smash it hard with a sledgehammer. If you hear a crack and crunch, then it's definitely broken. If not, repeat until you know for sure.

Or go to a doctor and get some x-rays. I hear those work pretty well for seeing if bones are broken.

They also work pretty well for putting me horribly in debt. 😉

P.S. If it still hurts 6 months later chances are that it hasn't set right.
It'll be a good ice breaker at parties. 😉

If, after I get off work, I can't move without crying, I'll go to the doctor.

I think the pain killers are kicking in.

I've done that..rushing around trying to get out of the house on time...then smash..the little people hit my toe with a hammer or something..by the time I got to work I was nearly crippled and gimped around night. Got home and took my shoe off and the little piggy and most of my foot was black and blue..took nearly 2 weeks before things healed.

What do the doctors do for a broken toe anyway?

I have known someone who went to a doctor after breaking one of his toes. I don't exactly recall what the treatment was but it didn't involve a cast in his case.

AFAIK they just tape it up and maybe give you crutches.

Luck you, I just broke my pinky toe last November. Mine was pointed away from the rest of my toes so it was pretty obvious. I could also tell something was wrong when the toe touched something , like the bed matress it felt like it wasn;t right.

Remember, it is best to get it x-rayed, and checked by the Dr. They had to reduce(straighten)mine, and check to make sure there was no interuption of circulation.

PS: I still have (shudder) vivid images of when that guy said "ready" and then crunch he straigtened it out.

Good luck. 🙂

Forgot to add that after it was reduced they took another picture of it and just taped it to the toe next to it.

Heh, I've been in similar situations. If this is broken, it's bone #17 for me. Right now I'm just really doped up (which luckily is very easy for me) on some ibuprofien, and the toe isn't swelling or anything. Hopefully it's just a bad sprain or something.

We'll see tomorrow I guess.

Everything is fluffy. 🙂
