Is there any recent games that plays like the Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate games?

I wish.

It's hard to find any adventure game these days that allows you to craft a party, and not just a single player; except for piles of turd like Dragon Age 2.

The most recent that plays like those games would probably be like

Neverwinter nights 1/2 + expansions
Dragon age 1

If you like that squad based type dnd style of rpg but not restricted to just the dnd universe then

Kotor 1 & 2 would be good games

No, trust me. You are new here so I gotta spell it out for you, if anybody knew anything about it, I would.

Theres plenty of mediocre birds eye view RPG's on Steam, but they are all inferior to Baldurs Gate.

While not entirely the same, I have enjoyed several of the Spiderweb Software RPGs. The combat is purely turn based as opposed to BG's "real-time with pause" combat but it still feels pretty close to me (I generally paused every turn in the tougher battles when playing BG anyhow). The questing and style of the games reminds me of Baldur's Gate for some reason, although sadly the graphics even on the newer titles are probably inferior to BG. Good fun though and they have nice long demos that give you a pretty good feel for how the games work.

Dragon Age:Origins is probably the closest, and it was pretty good. Steer away from the sequel though.

NWN, Dragon Age (1), and KotOR games are great, but the OP asked for recent games.

All of those are quite old, with DA probably being the most recent at what... 4 years ago?

Not recent, but you could try planescapee tourment or arcanum. I would argue that these two are as good as baldur's gate.

Anyone play Drakensang? I recall it receiving favorable reviews.

I've started it svereal times, but the beginning is not compelling, and I peter out each time (I have it on D2D/gamefly).

I really should stick it out for once, because most things I've read say it gets much better later on.

Kind of what others have said. pretty much No.

I like NWN1/2 both. Of these NWN2 is closer to the squad based combat, but even it is a bit older.

Dragon Age: Origins (but NOT DA2) would be another way to go.

One of my personal favorites is Temple of Elemental Evil. it was a deeply flawed game upon release, but community has patched it up quite nicely and I recommend it. They even have a community made expansion based on another of the classic Modules called Keep on the Borderlands (not sure if it is out yet). But still a very old game.

You may want to look over at baldursgate.com and see what they are doing over there. They are working on what they call "Enhanced" edition, which may simply be a paint job and compatibility fixes to run it on a tablet (disappointing), but it might not.

Also, as others have recommended, look up Planescape: Torment and Arcanum (more steam-punk fantasy).

Finally, I would point to the original Fallout 1 and 2. Both were excellent games of that nature. And Wasteland 2 is being worked on which promises to be a return to that type of game.

NW2 would be the closest "modern" game.

Dragon Age: Origins is pretty close gameplay wise as well.

Arcanum was amazing. You could literally do anything if your character was built for it. It seemed like every confrontation had at least 6 possible solutions. If you wanted followers you needed to have high personality skills, if you have that, then you probably can't fight for shit.

That game was very difficult as well. Just getting out of the initial town was a pain in the ass. I think I had to make like 6 Molotov cocktails and throw them all at the group guarding the bridge while kiting around the map. This game seriously could use a sequel.

You'll have to wait until next year for Wasteland 2.

There are plenty of party-based RPGs and JRPGs, but not many where you get to create all of your own party.

The Neverwinter Nights 2 - Storm of Zehir expansion is supposed to be that kind of game but I haven't tried it myself.

Regarding NW2. The first expansion, Mask of the Betrayer is brilliant imo and far superior to the main game which had a weak plot. I'd strongly recommend that to any fan of the Baldur's Gate games

Storm of Zehir was a decent outing in the vein of an Icewind Dale type adventure. The story wasn't as strong as mask of the Betrayer, but it was more intended to just be a dungeon crawl (although the actual Dungeons themselves were slightly underwhelming). Still it was worth it (IMHO).

But more so even than the expansions (or the original campaign) for NWN2 is the shear number of community made modules. these alone make the game worth purchasing as they will keep you in hundreds of hours of good quality gameplay. And there is some truly inspired stuff out there.

Something else you might want to consider is Legend of Grimrock. Although this isn't quite in the vein of a Baldur's gate, it has been getting some excellent reviews. And is a party based adventure with some monsters and some puzzle solving. I haven't played it myself, but it is definitely on my 'To do' list. People are saying it compares favorably to any solid RPG dungeon crawler.

But you don't actually create your entire party with Baldur's Gate unless you play a Multiplayer game do you? I have to confess that I just finished BG1 for the first time (this week), but I only created my main character. The rest of my party consisted of NPCs I met in the game. I did get to level them up, but the base characters were already made.

Good point. I think you could do a fake multiplayer to let you create the full party but I don't remember whether I ever tried that. I think I only ever played through BG 1 - 2 with the pre-created party members.

AnthonyStarks24 should come back to his thread and tell us what parts of BG1 and Icewind he's looking for in newer games. If it's just the party-based part (vs. solo games like Oblivion) then there are a lot more choices.

Just start a multiplayer game, create all the characters, and control all of them (through the multiplayer setup). Nothing fake or hacked about it; it's actually quite amazing the game lets you play with others or lets you play all the characters by yourself.

The only way I play BG2 is like that anymore. After you've had fun playing through it normally, it's a blast to make your own party and craft it through the adventure.

I liked the online multiplayer aspects of Neverwinter Nights. It's a shame that we can't get a legit sequel for that.

The people you meet are more than good enough to make several varieties of balanced parties. Plus they have their own quests. And loads of dialog.

I just installed Wizardry 8 without any high hopes that it would work on Win 7, but to my pleasant surprise it works perfectly.

The view is first person (and it's not recent), but it's a party based game with a lengthy deep story. You might want to check it out.
