I like the repair feature. More than once, something has been acting weird, and the repair feature fixed it. Also, print preview can be nice. There are no doubt other little changes, but those are the main two I have noticed.
Probably about a zillion bugfixes and security patches. Microsoft "updates" are 90% composed of fixes for bugs that should not have shipped with the previous release anyway. But what do you expect when profits are ten times as important as stability? Stuff gets shipped as soon as it compiles.
The advantages are a collection of new 'features' and bug-fixes.
The disadvantages include numerous new bugs and security-issues.
If you're worried about security, stay with IE5.0 and update it with the latest patches. Or use a browser like Mozilla or Opera which aren't totally integrated in the OS and thus much more secure.

And I suppose all the software you write is totally bug free. Fact is that Netscape and other browsers have security issues as well. As for stability, I've never had a problem with Internet Explorer crashing.
To answer the main question - if you're formatting, you may as well add IE 5.5. There's not much to be gained by upgrading a system that is running IE5 now.
I upgraded to 5.5 and it totally frelled my e-mail program, i had to go back to 5 and lost everything. Shoud'a known better to upgrade ms product with backup of everything including the kitchen sink.....:disgust:
Well IE5.5 has those neat DirectX features that you can play with. Though you have to visit a site that supports it. I've personally played with some of the DirectX effect features for website design and they are pretty cool. Only downside is that it's kinda hard to make it backward compatible for a static layout.
