Is there any reason to get a 19" LCD over a 17" LCD?

They both have the same resolution so therefore you cannot fit more stuff on a 19" desktop than a 17", the 17" will probably have less input lag and take up slightly less space.

So my question is do you see any reason at all to go for the NEC 90GX2 over the NEC 70GX2?

If you going to buy a monitor, then get a WS monitor if you can like the VX2025 if it's not out of your budget.

So, whats your budget?

Yeah I was at first setting out for a WS monitor in fact, but I'm trying to avoid any input lag at all because right now I'm using a CRT and I play a lot of fast paced FPS games where slight movements of the mouse really matter. I was at Fry's Electronics the other day and I used a 90GX2 and I didn't sense any input lag and I thought the colors on it looked near perfect and I really like the Opticlear technology.

And as for budget, I really don't have one, just keep it under $400.

But anyway, back to the original question...

A 17" LCD will have the same amount of desktop space as a 19", correct?

there is not a whole lot of differences between 17s and 19s now. However 19s tend to be the market focus now as they are much more popular. Consider that you can get a Viewsonic VX922 for less than 250 dollars after rebate. This is a fantastic 19 inch monitor. If you want budget (and less performance) you can still find ok 19 inch LCDs for under 150 bucks, although id avoid that route personally. Just remember, you cannot assume one monitor is better than the other based on size/brand. Check out the LCD review thread and see what fits you best.

The Viewsonic VX2025 Widescreen monitor is a much better value IMO. 1600x1050 widescreen with good gaming response.

*edit* And yes, both a 17 and a 19 will be 1280x1024. However the 19 inch will make things a little bigger. Honestly I dont know any reason to stick with 17s anymore to be honest, unless your on a very strict budget.

well, recently I was thinking about the NEC 70gx2, or a 90gx2... The prices are pretty far apart.

Across my old Sony X73, the Samsung 204B I had, and my current VX2025, I have percieved no input lag, and no ghosting. I play CS:S, and if any FPS is fast paced, CS:S is...aside from the tearing I got with the 204b at 1600x1200, I've had no issues. I'll never go back to a CRT again.

They're cheaper, which makes it more affordable to buy 2. Or to buy one.
Lower power consumption.
Better match up if you later buy a 20" widescreen monitor (in terms of screen height).

19"ers seem to be the norm and their prices are great now. Why not have 2" bigger? esspecially for games, it make head shots easier etc too....

I've also heard there is a bit more quality control with 19s rather than 17's. No idea how true that is.

I've used both, and 19" LCDs are simpler much better for gaming than a 17" LCD. There is no reason why a 17" LCD would have better input lag than a 19" LCD. From what I know, image lag depends on the number of picles , not monitor size. It happens on larger LCDs that are using the same processor as smaller LCDs. In this case, you have the same resolution being covered by the input processor.

The 19" ones are basically bigger and look more impressive, but may actually exhibit a more prominent screen door effect due to the larger pixels. The 70GX2 and 90GX2 seem to be pretty much identical otherwise. You can get either one within your $400 budget. Both are excellent choices due to the coating; I have a 90GX2 and it's great for daytime usage. Neither one should have any input lag, which seems to be limited to the 23/24" 1920x1200 ones (although you may need to run it at 75hz for smoother mouse movements like I do).

at the same res on both screens the 17" will have alot smaller text which may be hard for you to look at. It would look much better on the 19".

I bought a Viewsonic VA1912wb 19" widescreen with DVI out and FPS'ers look and run great on it.
