So many good suggestions!! Thanks a lot for all the good replies!

After listening to a lot of samples I think I am going to go to Tower Records tommorow and try to pick up a Pharcyde cd, a Mos Def cd and maybe an Ugly Duckling cd. Any thoughts on how likely it is to find those in cd stores? I think I want "Bizarre Ride II", "Black on Both Sides" and "Meatshake."

I am going on a trip soon and I want some good tunes to bring along

Thanks!!

It's what we call nowadays, "underground rap" it's the rap without the stupid trendy crap in the lyrics, it's actually lyrical and they don't talk about "putting a few caps in a cop" every other second, or bitch and moan about how they got shot 8 times being a gangster in every song, nobody cares.

There's a lot of underground rappers that talk about cars and guns they don't have and there's a lot of unknown rappers that suck...just because someone is obscure doesn't make them good.

For example :)

Oh, and at the same time, just because someone has managed to make lots of money through hip hop does not automatically mean that their music is bad.

I don't know about you and other people, but I've never heard of those guys...... I've never really heard a group like Jurassic 5 rapping about shooting people....

Yes, not all unknown rappers rap about guns. Many unknown rappers rap about guns. Therefore, just because a rapper is unknown does not make him worth listening to

I guess I was just talking more about the "known" underground rappers, at least I haven't heard about a lot of them rapping about shooting people.

I have never been a fan of rap until a friend played me Atmosphere. So much different from your mainstream rap. God Loves Ugly is probably their best album

Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde isn't too hard to find. I got lucky and found a copy at a Best Buy once, so anything is possible. Amazing album, BTW. Not sure about the others.

If you are going to get a pharcyde album
i may suggest "Labcabincalifornia" - it is possibly one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time
and also on that note
i might also suggest the album by the "souls of mischief" entitled "93 til infinity"
it is also another classic album

EDIT:
link for 93 til infinity on amazon.com
the page with labcabincalifornia doesnt have samples on it

I went to the cd store today...they had no Pharcyde, but I did get the Mos Def cd. I also picked up a cd by Blue Scholars, which I guess is a local rap group (Seattle, WA). Anywho, it's actually a very good cd. I suggest that some of you check it out. I think it is the only cd they have out.

Another suggestion to go Old Skool. Everything was raw and fresh back then. The good ole days. I'm crazy about my Old Skool collection including but not limited to:

Big Daddy Kane
LL Cool J
Boogie Down Productions
Slick Rick
Run DMC
Public Enemy

There are more but it's quittin' time and I'm outta here...
